Transthoracic needle biopsy (TNB) has emerged as the semi-invasive technique of choice for the diagnosis of localized intrathoracic lesions. Using CT, fluoroscopic, or sonographic guidance, TNB is highly accurate and safe when combined with expert pathologic interpretation of the aspirated specimen.

The acuities of the conventional biopsy device and of a new design of biopsy needle holder were determined in an in vitro study using fresh pork kidney. A second study, using fresh beef kidney, evaluated the effect of different surface treatments on the acuity of biopsy needles.
