Ultrasonic Actuation of a Fine-Needle Improves Biopsy Yield [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Despite the ubiquitous use over the past 150 years, the functions of the current medical needle are facilitated only by mechanical shear and cutting by the needle tip,i.e.the lancet. In this study, we demonstrate how nonlinear ultrasonics (NLU) extends the functionality of the medical needle far beyond its present capability. The NLU actions were found

Molecular testing of soft tissue tumors

open access: yesDiagnostic Cytopathology, Volume 51, Issue 1, Page 12-25, January 2023., 2023
Abstract Background The diagnosis of soft tissue tumors is challenging, especially when the evaluable material procured is limited. As a result, diagnostic ancillary testing is frequently needed. Moreover, there is a trend in soft tissue pathology toward increasing use of molecular results for tumor classification and prognostication. Hence, diagnosing

Engineered Peptides‐Based Hybrid‐Nested Microneedle Effectively Treat Biofilm‐Infected Diabetic Wounds

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid‐nested microneedle/cryogel scaffold (MQW‐CMg‐MOF) is designed for efficient biofilm removal and accelerated healing of diabetic wounds. The scaffold shows substantial biofilm removal in vitro and in a preclinical diabetic swine biofilm‐infected wound model compared to the control.

Stable, Easy‐to‐Handle, Fully Autologous Electrospun Polymer‐Peptide Skin Equivalent for Severe Burn Injuries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A bioengineered skin equivalent composed of electrospun poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) and the bioactive peptide Fmoc‐FRGD is developed for severe burn treatment. This scaffold promotes full‐thickness skin regeneration by supporting cellular adhesion and integration. In‐vitro and in‐vivo studies show enhanced mechanical stability, accelerated wound closure,

Reducing infectious complications after transrectal prostate needle biopsy using a disposable needle guide: is it possible?

open access: yesInternational Brazilian Journal of Urology, 2011
PURPOSE: To investigate whether the use of a disposable needle guide results in a decreased incidence of infectious complication after transrectal prostate needle biopsy (TPNB).

Safer Motion Planning of Steerable Needles via a Shaft-to-Tissue Force Model [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Steerable needles are capable of accurately targeting difficult-to-reach clinical sites in the body. By bending around sensitive anatomical structures, steerable needles have the potential to reduce the invasiveness of many medical procedures. However, inserting these needles with curved trajectories increases the risk of tissue damage due to ...

Motor‐Free Soft Robots for Cancer Detection, Surgery, and In Situ Bioprinting

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Novel motor‐free soft robots for cancer detection, surgery, and in situ bioprinting–are presented. This master‐slave system is constructed from soft fibrous syringe architectures, removing the need for electrical motors and complex control mechanisms, while reducing the physical tremors.

Strategising template-guided needle placement for MR-targeted prostate biopsy [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Clinically significant prostate cancer has a better chance to be sampled during ultrasound-guided biopsy procedures, if suspected lesions found in pre-operative magnetic resonance (MR) images are used as targets. However, the diagnostic accuracy of the biopsy procedure is limited by the operator-dependent skills and experience in sampling the targets ...

Imine Crosslinked, Injectable, and Self‐Healing Fucoidan Hydrogel with Immunomodulatory Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study develops an injectable fucoidan‐based hydrogel with tunable properties for tissue engineering. By oxidizing fucoidan (OFu) to introduce aldehydes, imine crosslinks are formed with amine‐containing polymers, enabling self‐healing, injectability, and long‐term stability (≥28 days). The OFu‐gelatin hydrogel demonstrated biocompatibility, immune‐

A cryptic EWSR1::DDIT3 fusion in myxoid liposarcoma: Potential pitfalls with FISH and cytogenetics

open access: yesGenes, Chromosomes and Cancer, Volume 62, Issue 3, Page 167-170, March 2023., 2023
Abstract Myxoid liposarcoma (MLS) is molecularly characterized by fusions involving the DDIT3 gene in chromosome band 12q13; the fusion partner is FUS in band 16p11 in 90–95% of the cases and EWSR1 in band 22q12 in the remaining 5–10%. Hence, molecular studies, often fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) for DDIT3 rearrangement, are useful for ...
