Critical Biot Numbers of Periodic Arrays of Fins

Journal of Thermal Science and Engineering Applications, 2017
In this paper, we consider the heat transfer problems associated with a periodic array of triangular, longitudinal, axisymmetric, and pin fins. The problems are modeled as a wall where the flat side is isothermal and the other side, which has extended surfaces/fins, is subjected to convection with a uniform heat transfer coefficient.

The Effect of Biot Number on a One-Dimensional General Conduction Solution

ASME 2021 Heat Transfer Summer Conference, 2021
Abstract Analytical solutions for thermal conduction problems are extremely important, particularly for verification of numerical codes. Temperatures and heat fluxes can be calculated very precisely, normally to eight or ten significant figures, even in situations involving large temperature gradients.

Direct Determination of the Biot Number in Oven Heating Tests

Journal of Fire Sciences, 1999
The Biot number for a gauze basket in an air oven—the heating arrangement in tests for spontaneous combustion—is determined by having an inert material in the basket instead of a combustible one, monitoring the central temperature and applying equations for non-steady conduction.

Temperature Dependent Property Considerations for Biot Number Matching With Composite Materials

Journal of Turbomachinery, 2022
Abstract High-temperature materials such as ceramic matrix composites (CMCs) are promising for advancements in gas turbine engines; however, experimental techniques are necessary to characterize the thermal behavior of high-temperature materials in scaled representative environments.

Effect of Biot number on thermal criticality in a couette flow

Journal of the Nigerian Association of Mathematical Physics, 2008
This paper studies the effect of Biot number on thermal criticality in a strongly exothermic reaction of a viscous combustible material placed in a channel with lower isothermal fixed wall and upper uniformly moving non-isothermal wall under Arrhenius kinetics, neglecting the consumption of the material.

An Inverse Method for Drying at High Mass Transfer Biot Number

Heat Transfer: Volume 3, 2003
The inverse problem of using temperature measurements to estimate the moisture content and temperature-dependent moisture diffusivity together with the heat and mass transfer coefficients is analyzed in this paper. In the convective drying practice, usually the mass transfer Biot number is very high and the heat transfer Biot number is very small. This

Characterization and Optimization of Fluid Flow in a High Biot Number System

MRS Proceedings, 2011
ABSTRACTExperiments and analysis have been conducted to characterize flow separators used in applications where heated fluid passes between layers of solid material such as in the manufacturing of gelatinous materials. The Biot number of the configuration is the key parameter, and must be taken into account when optimizing performance. It is shown that

Biot-Zahl Bi (Biot number Bi)

2000

The disappearance of criticality for small activation energy with arbitrary biot number

Combustion and Flame, 1982
Abstract For exothermic reactions obeying the Arrhenius equation the critical conditions for thermal ignition are known to exist for activation energy E large enough satisfying ϵ ≡ RT a E tr . This transition value ϵtr of ϵ has values less than 0.25 in all geometries, (Boddington et al.

Unrestraining the Biot Number for Systems With Internal Heat Generation

Journal of Solar Energy Engineering
Abstract Thermal runaway from hot spots in systems such as solar energy storage poses a safety concern. Tools for rapid analysis of these systems would be exceedingly useful in their development and maintenance. The “lumped capacitance” (LC) assumption is one of these analysis tools and is limited to Biot numbers less than about 0.1 ...
