Design and Joint Control of a Conjoined Biplane and Quadrotor

Unmanned Systems, 2023
Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have the potential to perform many different missions, some of which may require a large aircraft for endurance and a small aircraft for maneuverability in wind gusts or cluttered environments such as buildings. This paper proposes a novel combination of a quadrotor and a hybrid biplane capable of joint hover, joint ...

Iterative Learning based feedforward control for Transition of a Biplane-Quadrotor Tailsitter UAS

2020 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), 2020
This paper provides a real time on-board algorithm for a biplane-quadrotor to iteratively learn a forward transition maneuver via repeated flight trials. The maneuver is controlled by regulating the pitch angle and propeller thrust according to feedforward control laws that are parameterized by polynomials.

Transition Trajectory Planning and Control for Quadrotor Biplanes in Obstacle Cluttered Environments

Proceedings of the Vertical Flight Society 78th Annual Forum and Technology Display, 2022
This paper presents a trajectory planner and a control architecture capable of guiding a quadrotor biplane tailsitter (QRBP) through obstacle cluttered environments. The trajectory planner is formulated as an optimization problem that uses a differentially flat, point-mass model of a QRBP that considers wake effects on the aerodynamic forces generated ...

Aerodynamic and Aeroacoustic Analysis of a Quadrotor Biplane Tailsitter

Journal of the American Helicopter Society
Unmanned aerial systems with vertical take-off and landing capability have seen rapid development with the advent of advanced air mobility. However, their high noise footprint remains a major obstacle to commercial deployment. This study investigates the aerodynamic mechanisms driving noise generation in such systems, focusing on a quadrotor biplane ...

Flight Dynamics and Control of a Transitioning Quadrotor Biplane Tailsitter

Journal of the American Helicopter Society
This article presents an in-depth flight dynamics analysis of a quadrotor biplane tailsitter and proposes novel dynamic inversion (DI) flight control laws for autonomous hover-to-cruise transition. As the basis for the synthesis and demonstration of such control laws, a flight dynamics model is developed that also accounts for rotor dynamics and rotor-

Sizing Tool for Quadrotor Biplane Tailsitter UAS

2017
The Quadrotor-Biplane-Tailsitter (QBT) configuration is the basis for a mechanically simplistic rotorcraft capable of both long-range, high-speed cruise as well as hovering flight. This work presents the development and validation of a set of preliminary design tools built specifically for this aircraft to enable its further development, including: a ...
