Long-term Population Survey of the Eastern Imperial Eagle in the Thracian Eco-region (Bulgaria and Turkey)

open access: yesПернатые хищники и их охрана, 2018
The Thrace geographical region comprises territories of three states and covers an area of about 70,000 km2. At the end of the 19th century, the Eastern Imperial Eagle (Aquila heliaca) was widespread throughout the region, occupying a variety of habitats.

Spring migration of Ruffs Philomachus pugnax in Fryslân: estimates of staging duration using resighting data [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Seasonal bird migration involves long flights, but most time is actually spent at intermediate staging areas. The duration of stay at these sites can be evaluated with mark–recapture methods that employ day-to-day local encounters of individually marked ...

Silicon‐Integrated Next‐Generation Plasmonic Devices for Energy‐Efficient Semiconductor Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Silicon (Si)‐integrated plasmonics offer a pathway to next‐generation, energy‐efficient semiconductor applications. This review highlights advances using complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS)‐compatible materials like transparent conductive oxides and novel architectures, particularly coupled hybrid plasmonic waveguides (CHPWs).

Enigmacursor mollyborthwickae, a neornithischian dinosaur from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of the western USA

open access: yesRoyal Society Open Science
Although their remains have been known since the 1870s, the small, bipedal ornithischian dinosaurs from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation of the western USA remain poorly known. The historic type specimens are incomplete and poorly preserved and have

Thinking with Birds: Mary Elizabeth Barber’s Advocacy for Gender Equality in Ornithology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
This article explores parts of the first South African woman ornithologist’s life and work. It concerns itself with the micro-politics of Mary Elizabeth Barber’s knowledge of birds from the 1860s to the mid-1880s.

A new time tree reveals Earth history’s imprint on the evolution of modern birds

open access: yesScience Advances, 2015
Estimates of the timing of evolution of modern birds reveals the influence of paleogeography and paleoclimate on diversification. Determining the timing of diversification of modern birds has been difficult.

Spermiogenesis in Birds [PDF]

open access: yesSpermatogenesis, 2014
Current knowledge on avian spermiogenesis, including strengths and weaknesses, has been reviewed. Information on avian spermiogenesis considerably lags behind that in mammals because of the paucity of reports in birds. Spermiogenesis in passerine birds has received even much less attention than in non-passerine birds.

Architected Elastomers as Load Bearing Actuators for Untethered Soft Robot Walking

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, EarlyView.
Electrically driven soft actuators that enable untethered soft robot walking are developed from 3D printed architected elastomers. The actuators have a handed shearing auxetic structure that enables fast, robust, and battery‐powered motions. The actuators are 3D printed from thermoplastic polyurethane on a desktop FDM printer.
