Non-Invasive Monitoring of the Spatio-Temporal Dynamics of Vocalizations among Songbirds in a Semi Free-Flight Environment Using Robot Audition Techniques

open access: yesBirds, 2021
To understand the social interactions among songbirds, extracting the timing, position, and acoustic properties of their vocalizations is essential. We propose a framework for automatic and fine-scale extraction of spatial-spectral-temporal patterns of ...

Establishment and optimization of the two‐step induction system for generating primordial germ cell‐like cells from chicken embryonic stem cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study optimizes a two‐step induction system to generate PGCLCs from chicken ESCs. The induced cells express germline markers and migrate to gonads in ovo, offering a novel approach for avian genetic resource conservation. Primordial germ cells (PGCs) are the progenitor cells of sperm and eggs.

Fossilized skin reveals coevolution with feathers and metabolism in feathered dinosaurs and early birds [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Feathers are remarkable evolutionary innovations that are associated with complex adaptations of the skin in modern birds. Fossilised feathers in non-avian dinosaurs and basal birds provide insights into feather evolution, but how associated ...

Integrating wetland bird point count data from humans and acoustic recorders

open access: yesAvian Conservation and Ecology, 2020
Wetland loss is cause for concern for populations of many wetland bird species throughout North America. The North American Breeding Bird Survey, the primary resource for broad-scale avian population data, does not provide sufficient data for many marsh ...

Visual Recovery Reflects Cortical MeCP2 Sensitivity in Rett Syndrome

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective Rett syndrome (RTT) is a devastating neurodevelopmental disorder with developmental regression affecting motor, sensory, and cognitive functions. Sensory disruptions contribute to the complex behavioral and cognitive difficulties and represent an important target for therapeutic interventions.

Survival rates of captive-bred Asian Houbara Chlamydotis macqueenii in a hunted migratory population [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Asian Houbara Chlamydotis macqueenii numbers are declining owing to unsustainable levels of hunting and poaching, with the main conservation response being population reinforcement through the release of captive-bred birds.

High Blood Parasite Infection Rate and Low Fitness Suggest That Forest Water Bodies Comprise Ecological Traps for Pied Flycatchers

open access: yesBirds, 2022
Blood parasites are considered to have strong negative effects on host fitness. Negative fitness consequences may be associated with proximity to areas where blood parasite vectors reproduce.

Accuracy of diagnostic codes and algorithms used to identify rheumatoid arthritis and juvenile idiopathic arthritis in administrative claims and electronic health records: systematic review and meta‐analysis.

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, Accepted Article.
Objective This systematic review aimed to assess the diagnostic accuracy of algorithms used to identify rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) in electronic health records (EHRs). Methods We searched MEDLINE, Embase, and CENTRAL databases and included studies that validated case definitions against a reference standard such ...
