Amphiphilic chloroazobenzenes, bearing different amino acids as end groups alanine, phenylalanine, and valine, exhibit excellent photoisomerizations. Varying structures of three amino acid groups participate in supramolecular formations and therefore photoinduced morphological transformations via adjusting intermolecular interactions. These interaction

Cosmological birefringence and the geometric phase of photons
Regarding axion electrodynamics in the background flat FRW universe, we show that cosmological birefringence arises from an adiabatic noncyclic geometric phase that appears in the quantum state of photons because of their interaction with the axion field.

Birefringence alteration plotted against internet birefringence.
Circles and rectangles indicate meridional and equatorial strain, respectively. The dashed and solid lines respectively represent regression curves of meridional and equatorial strains obtained by linear regression analysis which explains the ...

A flexible liquid‐crystalline electrolyte membrane via in situ photopolymerization of a phosphate‐functionalized mesogen, ionic liquid, and diacrylate monomer is developed. The resulting smectic B (SmB)‐phase structure enables 2D ion transport with high conductivity (10−4 S cm−1).

Orbital angular momentum modes in optical fibers have polarization mode dispersion. The relationship between polarization mode dispersion and the birefringence vector can be deduced using an optical fiber dynamic equation. First, a mathematical model was

Helix Alignment, Chevrons, and Edge Dislocations in Twist‐Bend Ferroelectric Nematics
The recently discovered twist‐bend ferroelectric nematic (NTBF) is the new member of the multiferroic family, representing a fluid with an oblique helicoidal (heliconical) periodic structure of spontaneous electric polarization. The work presents a thorough exploration of the material properties of this phase, how the periodic modulation of ...

Optical birefringence imaging of x-ray excited lithium tantalate
X-ray absorption in lithium tantalate induces large, long-lived (∼10−5 s) optical birefringence, visualized via scanning optical polarimetry. Similar birefringence measured from glass, sapphire, and quartz was two orders of magnitude weaker; much of this

On the birefringence of rods and cones [PDF]
Measurements were made of the birefringence of bleached rods and cones of six non-mammalian vertebrates. The variables included fixatives and temperature, and the immersing medium namely ethyl alcohol, urea, type of Ringer solution, and sucrose. The temperature variations of the birefringence of rods and cones were similar in frogs and in goldfish ...

Harnessing Phase Separation for the Development of High‐Performance Hydrogels
ABSTRACT Hydrogels are indispensable for the development of next‐generation bioelectronics, soft robotics, and biomedical devices, where their mechanical properties determine performance and reliability. Among strategies to enhance hydrogel mechanics, phase separation enables controlled heterogeneity resulting in gel networks that are reinforced by ...
