Epitaxial growth of aligned semiconductor nanowire metamaterials for photonic applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
A novel class of optical metamaterials is presented consisting of high densities of aligned gallium phosphide (GaP) nanowires fabricated using metal-organic vapor phase-epitaxy.

First results from the new PVLAS apparatus: a new limit on vacuum magnetic birefringence

open access: yes, 2014
Several groups are carrying out experiments to observe and measure vacuum magnetic birefringence, predicted by Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). We have started running the new PVLAS apparatus installed in Ferrara, Italy, and have measured a noise floor ...

Birefringence compensation in double-core optical waveguides [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
A new concept for birefringence compensation in planar optical waveguides applying a double-core structure is introduced. It is demonstrated on waveguides fabricated in silicon oxynitride technology for applications in optical ...

Intermolecular Interactions as Driving Force of Increasing Multiphoton Absorption in a Perylene Diimide‐Based Coordination Polymer

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study uncovers the unexplored role of intermolecular interactions in multiphoton absorption in coordination polymers. By analyzing [Zn2tpda(DMA)2(DMF)0.3], it shows how the electronic coupling of the chromophores and confinement in the MOF enhance two‐and three‐photon absorption.

Viscoelasticity and Birefringence of Low Birefringent Polyesters [PDF]

open access: yesPolymer Journal, 2000
Dynamic viscoelasticity and dynamic birefringence were investigated for a series of polyesters with various combinations of dimethyl decalin 2,6-carboxylate, DMHN and dimethyl terephthalate, DMT as acid component and 9,9-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-ethoxy)phenyl]fluorene, BPEF and ethylene glycol, EG as diol component.

Reducing Polarization Mode Dispersion With Controlled Polarization Rotations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
One of the fundamental limitations to high bit rate, long distance, telecommunication in optical fibers is Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD). Here we introduce a conceptually new method to reduce PMD in optical fibers by carrying out controlled ...

Modulating Two‐Photon Absorption in a Pyrene‐Based MOF Series: An In‐Depth Investigation of Structure–Property Relationships

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates H4TBAPy‐based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) ‐ NU‐1000, NU‐901, SrTBAPy, and BaTBAPy ‐ for multiphoton absorption (MPA) performance. It observes topology‐dependent variations in the 2PA cross‐section, with BaTBAPy exhibiting the highest activity.

Tuning the Dielectric Properties of Individual Clay Nanosheets by Interlayer Composition: Toward Nano‐Electret Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The dielectric properties of clays are studied on the level of individual monolayers and functional double stacks. The material breakdown characteristics and charge storage performance are analyzed. For illustration, a defined charge pattern representing a cuneiform character is produced, written into a microscopic clay tile, referencing the origins of

Multiple designs with broad applicability for enhancing birefringence in low-loss terahertz HC-ARF

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2023
The use of hollow-core anti-resonant fiber (HC-ARF) as a transmission medium for the terahertz (THz) frequency range is attracting increasing attention from researchers. This paper introduces a low-loss, high birefringence anti-resonant fiber.
