An improved method for the determination of micro-amounts of phosphorus by atomic absorption spectrometry is described. This technique is not generally applied to the determination of non-metals as their resonance lines fall in the ultraviolet region where atmospheric absorption is a problem.

An indirect method for determination of phosphorus by atomic-absorption spectrophotometry has been developed, based on formation of the bismuthophosphomolybdate complex and its extraction by methyl isobutyl ketone. Bismuth is determined in the extract and correlated with the phosphorus content. The method is applicable to different kinds of steel.

Abstract Phosphorus plays a key role in the fabrication of silicon-based electronic devices. The determination of phosphorus in silicon has been carried out by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) using a bismuth phosphomolybdate complex. Bismuth and phosphorus are present in the stoichiometric ratio of 1:1 in the complex.
