Repeatable Runout Following in Bit Patterned Media Recording

open access: yes2014 Conference on Information Storage and Processing Systems, 2014
An adaptive feedforward controller design for tracking repeatable runout (RRO) in bit patterned media recording (BMPR) is proposed for single stage hard disk drives (HDD). The technique is based on a modified filtered-x least mean squares (MFX-LMS) algorithm with deterministic periodic input, and a novel variable step size that boosts both the ...

Recording on Bit-Patterned Media at Densities of 1 Tb/in$^2$and Beyond

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2006
We present a comprehensive analysis of the areal density potential of a bit-patterned media recording. The recording performance is dominated by written-in errors rather than traditional signal-to-noise considerations. Written-in errors are caused by statistical fluctuations of the magnetic properties and the locations of the individual dots.

The potential of bit patterned media in shingled recording

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2012
Abstract Shingled recording on continuous and bit patterned media (BPM) is compared. From a recording viewpoint, continuous media have the advantage due to the lack of a need to synchronise writing with dot position. For BPM the write windows at 4 Tbit/in 2 are only a couple of nm across, requiring extremely tight manufacturing tolerances.

Joint-Track Equalization and Detection for Bit Patterned Media Recording

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2010
We compare several different detection and equalization methods for bit patterned media recording channels. We consider a scheme that utilizes a joint-track equalization technique followed by a Viterbi detector. For certain recording densities, simulation results show that it has essentially the same performance as an optimal detector but with reduced ...

Prospects for bit patterned media for high-density magnetic recording

Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials, 2009
Abstract Prospects for bit patterned media (BPM) of more than 1 Tb/in2 are discussed. Improvement in the pattern drawing for small feature size and high precision is necessary for fabrication process. Deviation in the magnetic properties should be estimated and reduced. The etching damage seems not to be large.

A simple recorded-bit patterning scheme for bit-patterned media recording

2013 10th International Conference on Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2013
In bit-patterned magnetic recording (BPMR), intersymbol interference (ISI) and inter-track interference (ITI) become a major impairment due to small bit and track pitches. One way to alleviate ISI and ITI is to encode the data sequence before recording.

Recording potential of bit-patterned media

Applied Physics Letters, 2006
A comprehensive analysis of the areal density potential of bit-patterned media recording shows that the recording performance is dominated by written-in errors. The statistical fluctuations of the magnetic properties and the locations of the individual bits lead to error probabilities so that some dots are either not recorded at all or cannot be ...

Optimization of LDPC codes for bit-patterned media recording with media noise

2016 16th International Symposium on Communications and Information Technologies (ISCIT), 2016
Challenges in bit-pattered magnetic recording (BPMR) include two-dimensional (2D) inter-symbol interference (ISI) constituted by both one-dimensional ISI and inter-track interference (ITI), and media noise arising from island position jitter (PJ) and island size fluctuations (SF) in both the down-track and cross-track directions.

Shingled Magnetic Recording on Bit Patterned Media

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2010
Shingled magnetic recording on bit patterned media with areal densities of 2-4 Tbit/in2 is examined. The use of a shingled recording scheme allows wider write poles and dots with higher anisotropy to be used. The down-track and cross-track write margins can be tailored to suit the tolerances of the drive by varying the bit cell aspect ratio.
