Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording on Dual Structure Bit Patterned Media

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2021
Heat-assisted magnetic recording on bit patterned media dots with two magnetic structures is modeled. If the magnetic structures have different Curie temperatures two bits of information can be stored in each dot by writing at high and low temperatures. The areal density capability of the dual structure media was calculated and found to be in excess of

Performance of Bit-Patterned Media Recording According to Island Patterns

2018 IEEE International Magnetics Conference (INTERMAG), 2018
To increase a density in hard disk drive, bit patterned media recording (BPMR) is regarded as a promising candidate for the next generation storage system. Reduction of spacing between bit islands is essential to increase the density in BPMR but causes inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-track interference (ITI).

Modeling, detection, and LDPC codes for bit-patterned media recording

2010 IEEE Globecom Workshops, 2010
In this paper, we present a thorough and comprehensive study for bit-patterned media recording (BPMR), from a signal processing and coding perspective. We first propose a recording-physics-based generic channel model for BPMR, which includes all the major characteristics and impairments of the system.

Iterative channel detection with LDPC product code for bit patterned media recording

2017 IEEE International Magnetics Conference (INTERMAG), 2017
Because of the explosion in data growth, the requirement for high-density storage systems has increased. Bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) is a candidate for the next-generation magnetic recording systems, and its many advantages facilitate the achievement of recording densities of 1 Tb/in2 and beyond. In BPMR, each information bit is represented by

Improving SOVA output using extrinsic informations for bit patterned media recording

2015 IEEE International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE), 2015
This research proposes a new detection scheme using three extrinsic information resources supporting two-dimensional soft output Viterbi algorithm (2D SOVA) for bit patterned media recording (BPMR) that is well-known as a candidate for the next-generation magnetic storage system.

Deletion/Insertion/Reversal Error Correcting Codes for Bit-Patterned Media Recording

2011 IEEE International Symposium on Defect and Fault Tolerance in VLSI and Nanotechnology Systems, 2011
Missynchronization in bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) causes deletion/insertion errors. This paper describes a model for BPMR and examines the applicability of deletion/insertion/reversal error-correcting codes based on the model. The decoded word error rates for single and double deletion/insertion/reversal error-correcting codes are compared.

9/12 Two-dimensional modulation code for bit-patterned media recording

2016 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference Digest (APMRC), 2016
This paper presents a 9/12 two-dimensional (2D) modulation code as a way to overcome 2D intersymbol interference (ISI) in bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) systems. BPMR systems are regarded as one of the promising candidates for the attainment of areal density increases that are beyond the capacities of conventional storage systems.

Scheme for utilizing the soft feedback information in bit-patterned media recording

2016 Asia-Pacific Magnetic Recording Conference Digest (APMRC), 2016
This paper presents a scheme that utilizes soft feedback information obtained from a decoder to eliminate detrimental interference in bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) systems. BPMR is a promising technology that can increase the storage area density of magnetic storage systems, but one of the main challenges is to overcome 2-D spatial interference.

A Parametric Study of Inter-Track Interference in Bit Patterned Media Recording

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2010
We present a parametric study of inter-track interference (ITI) in the context of bit patterned media (BPM) recording channels. Bit error rate (BER) simulation results for optimal bit detection at moderate-to-high signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) show that, in a certain range of ITI levels, increased ITI does not necessarily degrade performance.

Three Typical Bit Position Patterns of Bit-Patterned Media Recording

IEEE Magnetics Letters, 2018
Bit-patterned media recording (BPMR) is regarded as a promising candidate for next-generation magnetic storage systems in order to increase areal density. BPMR exhibits massive two-dimensional interference, however, that consists of horizontal intersymbol interference from neighboring bits and vertical intertrack interference (ITI) from adjacent tracks.
