Understanding and Circumventing Failure Mechanisms in Chalcogenide Optical Phase Change Material Ge2Sb2Se4Te

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, Volume 13, Issue 8, March 13, 2025.
Chalcogenide optical PCMs have gathered interest for their potential in compact, non‐volatile optics and photonics. Free‐space PCM metasurfaces require new considerations from phase change memory that need to be addressed for reliable scale‐up. Several failure mechanisms pertaining to free‐space PCM devices and layout methods are isolated to prevent ...

Dark‐State Guided‐Mode Resonance Sensors: Engineering Miniature Sensing Platforms

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This research introduces compact guided‐mode resonance sensing using Gaussian‐beam‐induced symmetry breaking to excite dark states. The method generates high‐quality resonance signals in a small area, demonstrating a sensor with 128 micro‐cells and 200 nm RIU−1 sensitivity, showing potential for lab‐on‐chip and biosensing applications.

Laser‐Written Ruby Emitters in MXenes: Transforming Residual Impurities Into Integrated Narrowband Luminescent Probes

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
Laser writing converts residual aluminum in MXenes into bright ruby emitters with laser‐like photoluminescence. This approach provides a universal optical tool for mapping material purity. Luminescence sensitivity to temperature, pressure and chemical environment turns synthesis liabilities into assets, enabling the formation of built‐in optical probes

Strong and Weak Coupling Nanophysics with Free Electron Beams

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This paper focuses on a short review of the study of the coupling between optical excitations at the nanometer scale, made possible by recent advances in free electron beam spectroscopies. In particular, plasmon–plasmon, plasmon–exciton, and plasmon–phonon couplings are reviewed. Abstract The work of Luis M.
