The influence of a cooling water system on waterbird habitat use in a coastal environment

open access: yesIbis, EarlyView.
This study investigated the impact of a cooling water system at a nuclear power plant in northern Europe on coastal waterbird habitat use. In winter, the cooling water system provided preferential areas for waterbirds with warm productive waters, and, more importantly, with ice‐free areas.

Exploration of Molecular Mechanisms of Immunity in the Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) in Response to Vibrio alginolyticus Invasion

open access: yesAnimals
Over the years, oysters have faced recurring mass mortality issues during the summer breeding season, with Vibrio infection emerging as a significant contributing factor.

Spatial habitat partitioning enables coexistence of three Gobiidae species in estuarine environments

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract This study examines resource partitioning (feeding morphology, diet and habitat partitioning) among three gobiid species, the Knysna sandgoby Psammogobius knysnaensis, the prison goby Caffrogobius gilchristi and the river goby Glossogobius callidus, within an estuarine environment.

The Effect of Medetomidine on the Burying Speed of Corbicula fluminea

open access: yes, 2012
A new anti-fouling drug, medetomidine, was tested to determine if it reduced the burying speed of a freshwater alien-invasive bivalve species, Corbicula fluminea.

Hidden partnerships in the dark: Cold‐water coral–fish associations in Fiordland, New Zealand

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The ichthyofauna of the Fiordland ecosystems of southern Aotearoa New Zealand was documented during four remotely operating vehicle (ROV) dives between 100 and 350 m depth. A total of 26 fish species were documented within two fiord basins.

Secondary production and biomass in mussel assemblages relate to species richness and stream size but not life history

open access: yesEcosphere
Increases in species richness with habitat area (species–area relationship, or SAR) and increases in ecosystem function with species richness (biodiversity–ecosystem functioning, or BEF) are widely studied ecological patterns.

Experimental Quantification of Nutrient Bioextracti on Potential of Oysters in Estuarine Waters of New Hampshire [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This project was a short-term field experiment conducted in summer 2010 and designed to provide preliminary data on the bioextraction (removal) of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) for two different size classes (both \u3c76mm shell height) of eastern oysters (

Non‐native pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha carcasses benefit native benthic macroinvertebrates

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract The invasion of the North Atlantic by pink salmon Oncorhynchus gorbuscha has raised concerns regarding their impact on coastal rivers. Although the influence of marine‐derived nutrients from returning adult O. gorbuscha on rivers in their native range has received much attention, the ecological consequences of invasive O.
