Black-crowned Night-Heron Nycticorax nycticorax
2005Abstract The Yellow-crowned Night-Heron is an intriguing species, in that it shows the most specialized development among crab-eating herons. Its stout, strong bill is used for catching and handling these hard-bodied and somewhat threatening prey. That the bill is geo- graphically variable is thought to be an evolutionary response to the ...

Black-Crowned Night Heron Fishes with Bait
Waterbirds: The International Journal of Waterbird Biology, 2001-A Black-crowned Night Heron (Nyticorax nyticorax) was observed manipulating bread to catch fish attracted to the bait. This is the second recorded instance of a Black-crowned Night Heron fishing with bait. Bait-fishing has also been observed in the Green Heron (Butorides virescens) and the closely-related Striated Heron (Butorides striatus); a related

Flow cytometry for monitoring contaminant exposure in black-crowned night-herons
Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1994The flow cytometry methods (FCM) was employed to determine cellular DNA content of black-crowned night-heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) embryos and 10-day-old chicks collected at sites differing in types of chemical contamination. The coefficient of variation of DNA content (CV) in blood collected from embryos suggested cytogenetic damage at a side in ...

Fluoride accumulation and bone strength in wild black-crowned night-herons
Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1990Fluoride was measured in femurs of black-crowned night-herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) living adjacent to a phosphate processing complex near Pocatello, Idaho. Fluoride (ash wt.) in femurs ranged from 540 micrograms/g to 11,000 micrograms/g and increased (P = 0.0001) with age, but with no difference (P = 0.80) between sexes. Adult males (greater than or

Active and Passive Bait-fishing by Black-Crowned Night Herons
The Wilson Journal of Ornithology, 2009Abstract Previous research reports bait-fishing in seven different species of ardeids. Our observations of Black-crowned Night Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, USA are the first to detail both passive and active bait-fishing in the same species. These observations provide support for the hypothesis that passive bait-fishing

Human Disturbance and Nestling Behavior in Black-Crowned Night Herons
The Condor, 1982-The effects of human disturbance on Black-crowned Night Heron (Nycticorax nycticorax) nestling behavior were studied at the Dead Neck Island (Barnstable Co., Massachusetts) heronry in June and July, 1980. Nestling response to disturbance was compared between three-week old chicks that had been regularly handled since hatching, and control nestlings ...

Organochlorine Residues in Atlantic Coast Black-Crowned Night-Heron Eggs, 1979
Colonial Waterbirds, 1983-Eggs of Black-crowned Night-Herons (Nycticorax nycticorax) were collected in 1979 from two colonies in North Carolina, two colonies in Rhode Island, and one colony in Massachusetts. Mean concentrations of DDE and PCBs were higher in the New England samples than in those from North Carolina.
