Black Hole Entropy in String Theory [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
In the first part of the thesis we examine the entropy of black strings in compactifications of F-theory on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold or of type IIB string theory on K3. The black strings arise as D3-branes wrapped on a curve in either the base of the Calabi-Yau threefold or in K3 and when compactified on an additional circle, they ...

Curvature-corrected dilatonic black holes and black hole -- string transition

open access: yes, 2008
We investigate extremal charged black hole solutions in the four-dimensional string frame Gauss-Bonnet gravity with the Maxwell field and the dilaton. Without curvature corrections, the extremal electrically charged dilatonic black holes have singular ...

Black Holes in String Theory

open access: yes, 1996
This thesis is devoted to trying to find a microscopic quantum description of black holes. We consider black holes in string theory which is a quantum theory of gravity. We find that the ``area law'' black hole entropy for extremal and near-extremal charged black holes arises from counting microscopic configurations.

Four-charge static non-extremal black holes in the five-dimensional N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2, STU − W 2 U supergravity

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics
We construct, for the first time, new static non-extremal five-dimensional black hole solutions (without or with squashed horizons) endowing with four different electric charge parameters in the D = 5, N $$ \mathcal{N} $$ = 2 supergravity coupled to ...

Weak gravity conjecture, black hole entropy, and modular invariance

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics, 2019
In recent literature, it has been argued that a mild form of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) is satisfied by wide classes of effective field theories in which higher-derivative corrections can be shown to shift the charge-to-mass ratios of extremal ...

Building the blocks of Schwarzschild

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics
We demonstrate that the Schwarzschild black hole can be “resolved” into bound states of Reissner-Nordström black holes in four dimensions. These bound states closely resemble the Schwarzschild geometry from the asymptotic region up to an infinitesimal ...

Quasi Normal Modes

open access: yes, 2003
We review different applications of quasinormal modes to black hole physics, string theory and thermalisation in quantum field theory. In particular, we describe the the relation between quasi normal modes of AdS black holes and the time scale for ...

On small black holes in string theory

open access: yesJournal of High Energy Physics
Abstract We discuss the worldsheet sigma-model whose target space is the d+1 dimensional Euclidean Schwarzschild black hole. We argue that in the limit where the Hawking temperature of the black hole, T, approaches the Hagedorn temperature, T H , it can be described in terms of a generalized ...
