The Economics of a 'Mixed Blessing' Effect: A Case Study of the Black Sea [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2002
Nutrient enrichment of marine ecosystems is regarded as a pressing global environmental problem. For certain marine species it may be a mixed blessing, resulting in damaging ecosystem events, but contributing to primary productivity. Consequently, the impact of enrichment on fishery profits may be positive or negative.

A 2020 Vision for the Black Sea Region: the Commission on the Black Sea Proposes

open access: yes, 2010
The Black Sea region is coming into its own although it is at times a contested and dangerous neighbourhood. Despite heightened interest in the region its real priorities and needs are still being largely ignored by insiders and outsiders alike.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Calpain small subunit homodimerization is robust and calcium‐independent

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Calpains dimerize via penta‐EF‐hand (PEF) domains. Using single‐molecule force spectroscopy, we measured the strength and kinetics of PEF–PEF homodimer binding. The interaction is robust, shows a transient conformational step before dissociation, and remains largely insensitive to Ca2+.

The crises in the Middle East: reshaping the region’s geopolitical landscape and altering the global order

open access: yesAsian Review of Political Economy
The recent events in the Middle East caught most political commentators, observers and thinkers by surprise. Who would have imagined that a non-state actor like Hamas could launch an attack on Israel and create such a complex condition for a powerful ...

An Analysis of the Wind Parameters in the Western Side of the Black Sea

open access: yesInventions, 2022
In the present research, an overview of the wind climate on the northwestern coast of the Black Sea basin is assessed, using a total of 6 years of data (2015–2020) provided by the National Institute of Marine Geology and Geoecology (GeoEcoMar).

Obesity Prevelance in West Black Sea Region: The Melen Study [PDF]

open access: yesEndocrinology Research and Practice, 2012
ABSTRACT Purpose: The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of obesity and abdominal obesity in the West Black Sea region of Turkey and to display the associated chronic diseases, especially Diabetes Mellitus (DM) in this population. Material and Method: We evaluated 2222 (1418 female, 804 male, mean age: 50) participants in Yigilca.

Structural insights into an engineered feruloyl esterase with improved MHET degrading properties

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
A feruloyl esterase was engineered to mimic key features of MHETase, enhancing the degradation of PET oligomers. Structural and computational analysis reveal how a point mutation stabilizes the active site and reshapes the binding cleft, expading substrate scope.

The Fate of Marine Litter in Semi-Enclosed Seas: A Case Study of the Black Sea [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science, 2019
The accumulation patterns of floating marine litter (FML) in the Black Sea and the stranding locations on coasts are studied by performing dedicated Lagrangian simulations using freely available ocean current and Stokes drift data from operational models. The low FML concentrations in the eastern and northern areas and the high concentrations along the
