Synchronizing pile formation of black soldier fly larvae

The European Physical Journal Special Topics, 2020
When confined to containers, black soldier fly larvae aggregate together, piling up in corners. How do these piles form, and what causes them to eventually break apart? In this combined experimental and numerical study, we confine 300 larvae to flat vertical containers and measure their activity using both time-lapse film and particle image velocimetry.

Using Black Soldier Fly Larvae for Processing Organic Leachates

Journal of Economic Entomology, 2012
A large number of biodegradable byproducts including alcohols, soluble saccharides, volatile organic acids, and amines accumulate in the liquid fraction (leachate) produced as vegetal and food scrap waste decomposes. Untreated leachate, because it is rich in nutrients and organic byproducts, has a high chemical oxygen demand and is normally cleared of ...

Physicochemical, functional, and antioxidant properties of black soldier fly larvae protein

Journal of Food Science, 2023
Abstract This study explores the multifaceted attributes of black soldier fly larvae protein (BSFLP), focusing on its physicochemical, functional, and antioxidant properties. BSFLP is characterized by 16 amino acids, with a predominant random coil secondary structure revealed by circular ...

House fly oviposition inhibition by larvae ofHermetia illucens, the black soldier fly

Journal of Chemical Ecology, 1984
Wild populations of house flies were inhibited from ovipositing into poultry manure containing larvae of the black soldier fly,Hermetia illucens (L.). A laboratory strain of house fly responded differently, readily ovipositing into manure with lower densities of soldier fly larvae, but avoiding the higher densities tested. The amount of timeH. illucens

Black soldier fly larvae effectively degrade lincomycin from pharmaceutical industry wastes

Journal of Environmental Management, 2022
Lincomycin fermentation residues (LFR) are the byproducts from the pharmaceutical industry, and contain high concentrations of antibiotics that could pose a threat to the environment. Here, we report that black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) and associated microbiota can effectively degrade LFR and accelerate the degradation of lincomycin in LFR.

Resource recovery from organic wastes using Black Soldier Fly Larvae

African Journal of Science, Technology and Social Sciences, 2022
Solid waste management is a cross-cutting issue impacting many aspects of the environment, society and economic development. Cities of low- and middle-income countries are currently facing severe challenges in management of the increasing amount of solid waste produced, particularly the organic waste fraction.
