Magnetic field decay in black widow pulsars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
We study in this work the evolution of the magnetic field in 'redback-black widow' pulsars. Evolutionary calculations of these 'spider' systems suggest that first the accretion operates in the redback stage, and later the companion star ablates matter ...

A Gaia view of the optical and X-ray luminosities of compact binary millisecond pulsars [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
In this paper, we study compact binary millisecond pulsars with low- and very low-mass companion stars (spiders) in the Galactic field, using data from the latest Gaia data release (DR3). We infer the parallax distances of the optical counterparts to spiders, which we use to estimate optical and X-ray luminosities.

The Nutritional Aspects of Cannibalism in Crustacean Aquaculture: With Emphasis on Cultured Tropical Spiny Lobsters

open access: yesReviews in Aquaculture, Volume 17, Issue 2, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Cannibalism in high‐value crustacean species, such as mud crab, clawed lobster, and spiny lobster, is a major impediment to commercial aquaculture due to its significant impact on survival and, hence, production. Knowledge of the nutrition acquired from consuming conspecifics may inform whether nutrient limitation is a primary reason for ...

First systematic study reporting the changes in eclipse cut-off frequency for pulsar J1544+4937 [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
We present results from a long-term monitoring of frequency dependent eclipses of the radio emission from PSR J1544+4937 which is a ``black widow spider'' millisecond pulsar (MSP) in a compact binary system. The majority of such systems often exhibit relatively long duration radio eclipses caused by ablated material from their companion stars. With the

Socio Emotional Learning Within Prison Walls: The Effects of GRIP Program (Guiding Rage into Power) as Perceived by Participant and Non Participant Incarcerated Persons

open access: yesJournal of Community &Applied Social Psychology, Volume 35, Issue 1, January/February 2025.
ABSTRACT Long‐term imprisonment often results in negative psychological and behavioural effects that hinder effective reintegration into society, exacerbating antisocial behaviour and increasing recidivism rates. In response to a Supreme Court mandate, California, the state with the second‐largest prison population in the United States, embarked on a ...

Black Widow Spider Bite: A Case Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
This article is a case study of a patient cared for in the hours before her death. After the patient's death, we learned the patient died of a black widow spider bite.

Change of Rotation Measure during the Eclipse of a Black Widow PSR J2051−0827

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal, 2023
Black widows are millisecond pulsars ablating their companions. The material blown from the companion blocks the radio emission, resulting in radio eclipses. The properties of the eclipse medium are poorly understood.

Spider waste enhances soil nutrient content, soil respiration, and plant growth

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 39, Issue 1, Page 140-153, January 2025.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Predators can alter the movement of nutrients through ecosystems by depositing waste products following predation. Whilst the benefits of predator waste for large predators (e.g. bears) or dense accumulations of predators (e.g.

Cognitive and Web Phenotypes of the Western Black Widow Spider [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Animals with brains create mental representations of their environment and their own position within it, and use these representations to make decisions.
