Investigating Spatial‐Temporal Optical Emission Spectroscopy of Unstable Positive Leaders in Long Sparks Under Atmospheric Pressure

open access: yesHigh Voltage, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study explores exciting state species and reaction pathways in positive leaders to better understand the breakdown mechanisms of long air gap discharges and natural lightning. Emission spectra from an unstable positive leader in a 1 m rod‐plate air gap under switching impulse voltages were observed, spanning 300–800 nm.

Light‐Activated Micromotors in Air Propelled by Thermal Convection

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 38, Issue 1, 2 January 2026.
Near‐infrared‐driven micromotors in air can overcome gravity and generate convective motion by a light‐induced thermal mechanism driven by a temperature gradient in the air caused by the interaction of the gold nanoparticles present on the surface of ZnO and NIR irradiation.

Polarization insensitive resonance-domain blazed binary gratings

open access: yesOptics Express, 2010
Three variants of binary blazed gratings with subwavelength features are considered, which have high first-order efficiencies in the non-paraxial domain for arbitrarily polarized light. A combination of effective medium theory and further parametric optimization with the Fourier modal method are used in design. Experimental demonstration is provided by

FLIP: Transforming Consumer Projectors into Maskless Microscale Photopatterning Tools via Fresnel Lens Integration

open access: yesAdvanced Materials Technologies, Volume 11, Issue 2, 22 January 2026.
A low‐cost, maskless visible light photopatterning system has been developed by combining a consumer‐grade projector with a single Fresnel lens, generating the Fresnel Lens Integrated Projector (FLIP) system. FLIP enables flexible photopatterning of solid and gel films with features down to 30 µm and 135 µm, respectively.

Control of femtosecond multi-filamentation in glass by designable patterned optical fields

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2016
We present a scheme for realizing femtosecond multi-filamentation with designable quantity and locations of filaments, based on the control of multi-focal spots formed by patterned optical fields (POFs) composed of multiple individual optical fields ...

Iridescence in Meat Caused by Surface Gratings

open access: yesFoods, 2013
The photonic structure of cut muscle tissues reveals that the well-ordered gratings diffract light, producing iridescent colours. Cut fibrils protruding from the muscle surface create a two-dimensional periodic array, which diffract light at specific ...

Experimental Test of the Three‐Setting Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt Inequality with Nonmaximally Orbital Angular Momentum Entangled States

open access: yesAdvanced Photonics Research, Volume 7, Issue 1, January 2026.
Herein, the maximum violation of the three‐setting Clauser–Horne–Shimony–Holt (CHSH) inequality using nonmaximally entangled photons with orbital angular momentum is demonstrated. By mapping the optimization problem to maximizing a triangle's perimeter inscribed in an ellipse, the experiment validates the geometric approach and highlights the ...

Generating, Separating and Polarizing Terahertz Vortex Beams via Liquid Crystals with Gradient-Rotation Directors

open access: yesCrystals, 2017
Liquid crystal (LC) is a promising candidate for terahertz (THz) devices. Recently, LC has been introduced to generate THz vortex beams. However, the efficiency is intensely dependent on the incident wavelength, and the transformed THz vortex beam is ...

Chemically Driven Nano‐Elastic Heterogeneities Control Fragility in Volcanic Melts

open access: yesAdvanced Science, Volume 13, Issue 5, 27 January 2026.
The study elucidates how nanoscale structural heterogeneity governs the mechanical behavior of volcanic glasses across compositions from basalt to rhyolite. Using a physicochemical framework, correlation length (ξ) and microscopic free volume (Vc) are derived from vibrational and physical properties, revealing systematic trends with silica content that

Waveguide couplers using parallelogramic-shaped blazed gratings

open access: yesOptics Communications, 1994
Abstract A novel type of waveguide coupler with a parallelogramic-shaped grating is investigated. Analysis shows that this type of coupler provides a stronger radiation factor and higher coupling efficiency than conventional sawtooth grating couplers.
