Progress toward a Soft X-ray Polarimeter

open access: yes, 2013
We are developing instrumentation for a telescope design capable of measuring linear X-ray polarization over a broad-band using conventional spectroscopic optics.

Harmonically-related diffraction gratings-based interferometer for quadrature phase measurements [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We demonstrate the use of shallow diffraction gratings for quadrature phase interferometry. A single shallow diffraction grating-based Michelson interferometer yields only trivial (0° or 180°) phase shift between different output ports.

Direct Nucleation of Hierarchical Nanostructures on Plasmonic Fiber Optics Enables Enhanced SERS Performance

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
An unconventional synthesis strategy enables the direct growth of shape‐tunable nanostructures, from multi‐dot to multi‐arm designs, on silica optical fiber tips. This breakthrough boosts the sensing power of plasmonic fiber‐optic probes and unlocks new possibilities for large‐scale, in situ nanofabrication on silicate‐based substrates, including ...

An Optothermal Raman Model Accounting for Convection, Radiation, and Substrate Effects for Evaluation of the Thermal Conductivity of Two‐Dimensional Coatings

open access: yesHeat Transfer, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Thermal conductivity of two‐dimensional (2D) materials is important to characterize as this will govern thermal transport physics in the various thermal and energy applications benefitting from the unique properties of these materials.

X-ray interferometry with transmissive beam combiners for ultra-high angular resolution astronomy

open access: yes, 2009
Interferometry provides one of the possible routes to ultra-high angular resolution for X-ray and gamma-ray astronomy. Sub-micro-arc-second angular resolution, necessary to achieve objectives such as imaging the regions around the event horizon of a ...

Low‐Frequency Raman Spectra of Natural Pyrrhotites: Polarization Dependence for Its Lattice Modes

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
The present study found low‐wavenumber Raman modes of pyrrhotite Fe1‐xS at ~68, ~87, ~117, and ~230 cm−1 for the first time, thanks to a lab‐built Raman spectrometer, in which the optical path of the incident laser was purged by Ar gas. The sufficiently high signal‐to‐noise and signal‐to‐base ratios enabled us to obtain the polarization dependence of ...

Diffractive oblique plane microscopy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Imaging of neuronal activity with fluorescent indicators is an important technique in neuroscience. However, it remains challenging to record volumetric image data at fast frame rates and good resolution.

Autoencoding Raman Spectra to Predict Analyte Concentrations

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, EarlyView.
An autoencoder‐based machine learning regression model was developed using datasets from nuclear and biopharmaceutical industries, utilising spatial heterodyne spectrometers under spontaneous and resonance conditions. This study focuses on the impact of small data volumes on data augmentation and architecture designs.

Control of femtosecond multi-filamentation in glass by designable patterned optical fields

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2016
We present a scheme for realizing femtosecond multi-filamentation with designable quantity and locations of filaments, based on the control of multi-focal spots formed by patterned optical fields (POFs) composed of multiple individual optical fields ...

Iridescence in Meat Caused by Surface Gratings

open access: yesFoods, 2013
The photonic structure of cut muscle tissues reveals that the well-ordered gratings diffract light, producing iridescent colours. Cut fibrils protruding from the muscle surface create a two-dimensional periodic array, which diffract light at specific ...
