The Design and Construction of a Blended Wing Body UAV

Our team consists of eight students, all majoring in Aerospace Engineering. We developed and constructed a 5 meter wingspan, fully composite blended wing body aircraft. Our UAV is equipped with a full navigation and autopilot system to allow for autonomous flight.

This paper presents aerodynamic studies of a blended wing body (BWB) configuration within an European project, MOB. Firstly, the effects of spanwise distribution on the BWB aircraft aerodynamic efficiency were studied through an inverse design approach, combining both a low fidelity panel method and a high fidelity RANS method.

This paper shows how the Wing Multidisciplinary Optimization Design (WingMOD) code is used to reconfigure and balance a Blended-Wing-Body (BWB) aircraft. Details are given on how a BWB optimization problem is set up in WingMOD, including how a series of optimizations is used to calibrate WingMOD to external analyses.
