Cell Calcification Models and Their Implications for Medicine and Biomaterial Research

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Calcification, is the process by which the tissues containing minerals are formed, occurring during normal physiological processes, or in pathological conditions. Here, it is aimed to give a comprehensive overview of the range of cell models available, and the approaches taken by these models, highlighting when and how methodological divergences arise,

Interference of Blood Cell Lysis on Routine Coagulation Testing

open access: yesArchives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, 2006
Abstract Context.—Preanalytical factors influencing the reliability of laboratory testing are commonplace. It is traditionally accepted that hemolytic samples are unsuitable for coagulation assays because of the release of hemoglobin, intracellular components, and thromboplastic substances from damaged blood cells ...

Translational Considerations for Injectable Biomaterials and Bioscaffolds to Repair and Regenerate Brain Tissue

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
The repair and regeneration of brain tissue faces both biological and technical challenges. Injectable bioscaffolds offer new opportunities to stimulate tissue regrowth in the brain by recruiting neural stem cells. Here, the translational issues are reviewed that need to be address to advance this promising new therapeutic approach from the bench to ...

High prevalence of factor XIII deficiency and its association with bleeding in extracorporeal membrane oxygenation patients: an observational study from a prospectively compiled biobank

open access: yesResearch and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis
Background: Coagulopathy is a major cause of death during extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). Factor (F)XIII may play an important role in bleeding risk and represents a potential target for future therapies.

The Massive Bleeding after the Operation of Hip Joint Surgery with the Acquired Haemorrhagic Coagulation Factor XIII(13) Deficiency: Two Case Reports

open access: yesCase Reports in Orthopedics, 2013
Two women, aged 81 and 61, became haemorrhagic after surgery. Their previous surgeries were uneventful with no unexpected bleeding observed. Blood tests prior to the current surgeries indicated normal values including those related to coagulation.

Haemostasis alterations in immune thrombocytopenia and their clinical significance

open access: yesResearch and Practice in Thrombosis and Haemostasis
Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is highly heterogeneous, and only a subset of patients with severe thrombocytopenia develops significant bleeding. ITP is also associated with a paradoxical increased risk of thrombosis.
