The Role of Blood Component Removal in Essential and Reactive Thrombocytosis

Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, 2002
Abstract: An elevated platelet count is now a common finding in both hospitalized and ambulatory patients with the advent of automated complete blood cell counters. Clinicians may be called upon to make a distinction between a reactive process and a primary hematologic disorder as the cause of a thrombocytosis and to determine whether treatment is ...

Selective removal of human serum amyloid P component from rat blood by use of an immunoaffinity membrane in an extracorporeal circulation system

Biomedical Applications, 1996
We examined the suitability of an immunoaffinity membrane (IAM) bearing specific antibody as a ligand for removing human serum amyloid P component (hSAP) from blood passed through a simple extracorporeal circulation system established in rats. The specific antibody was the most effective of the various ligands tested for removing hSAP from human blood.

Acoustophoretic removal of proteins from blood components

Biomedical Microdevices, 2015
This work presents the development of a miniaturized system for removing plasma proteins and other low-molecular-weight compounds from red blood cell (RBC) concentrate in a simple one-step-process using integrated ultrasound. The technology utilizes the principles of acoustophoresis to transfer the RBCs from the original plasma-containing solution into

The effects of leukodepletion on the generation and removal of microvesicles and prion protein in blood components

Transfusion, 2006
BACKGROUND:  Universal leukodepletion (LD) has been implemented in the United Kingdom to reduce the risk of transfusion‐transmitted variant Creutzfeldt‐Jakob disease. If LD causes microvesiculation of blood cells, however, potentially infectious membrane‐associated prion could reach the final products.STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS:  We have measured ...
