Is accurate and reliable blood loss estimation the 'crucial step' in early detection of postpartum haemorrhage: an integrative review of the literature

open access: yesBMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, 2015
BackgroundPostpartum haemorrhage (PPH) is the leading cause of maternal mortality in low-income countries and severe maternal morbidity in many high-income countries.

YAP1::TFE3 mediates endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal plasticity in epithelioid hemangioendothelioma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
The YAP1::TFE3 fusion protein drives endothelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition (EndMT) plasticity, resulting in the loss of endothelial characteristics and gain of mesenchymal‐like properties, including resistance to anoikis, increased migratory capacity, and loss of contact growth inhibition in endothelial cells.

Activation of electroneutral K flux in Amphiuma red blood cells by N-ethylmaleimide. Distinction between K/H exchange and KCl cotransport. [PDF]

open access: yes, 1987
Exposure of Amphiuma red blood cells to millimolar concentrations of N-ethylmaleimide (NEM) resulted in net K loss. In order to determine whether net K loss was conductive or was by electroneutral K/H exchange or KCl cotransport, studies were performed ...

Platelets stop us leaking [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this issue of Blood, Welsh and colleagues determine how platelet thrombi limit the loss of plasma-borne proteins from the microvasculature. 1 The concept that platelets prevent leakage from blood vessels following a penetrating injury will come as ...

Transfusions and blood loss in total hip and knee arthroplasty: a prospective observational study

open access: yesJournal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research, 2015
BackgroundThere is a high prevalence of blood product transfusions in orthopedic surgery. The reported prevalence of red blood cell transfusions in unselected patients undergoing hip or knee replacement varies between 21% and 70%.

Emerging role of ARHGAP29 in melanoma cell phenotype switching

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
This study gives first insights into the role of ARHGAP29 in malignant melanoma. ARHGAP29 was revealed to be connected to tumor cell plasticity, promoting a mesenchymal‐like, invasive phenotype and driving tumor progression. Further, it modulates cell spreading by influencing RhoA/ROCK signaling and affects SMAD2 activity. Rho GTPase‐activating protein

Rectal Misoprostol in Women Undergoing Myomectomy for Intraoperative Blood Loss Reduction: A double-blinded randomized placebo-controlled study

open access: yesThai Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, 2019

Blood Density Is Nearly Equal to Water Density: A Validation Study of the Gravimetric Method of Measuring Intraoperative Blood Loss

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Medicine A, 2015
Purpose. The gravimetric method of weighing surgical sponges is used to quantify intraoperative blood loss. The dry mass minus the wet mass of the gauze equals the volume of blood lost. This method assumes that the density of blood is equivalent to water

In vitro properties of patient serum predict clinical outcome after high dose rate brachytherapy of hepatocellular carcinoma

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Following high dose rate brachytherapy (HDR‐BT) for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), patients were classified as responders and nonresponders. Post‐therapy serum induced increased BrdU incorporation and Cyclin E expression of Huh7 and HepG2 cells in nonresponders, but decreased levels in responders.
