Blood-coated sensor for high-throughput ptychographic cytometry on a Blu-ray disc [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
Blu-ray drive is an engineering masterpiece that integrates disc rotation, pickup head translation, and three lasers in a compact and portable format. Here we integrate a blood-coated image sensor with a modified Blu-ray drive for high-throughput cytometric analysis of various bio-specimens.

Reflection-mode optical diffraction tomography for label-free imaging of thick biological specimens [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Optical diffraction tomography (ODT) has emerged as a powerful label-free three-dimensional (3D) bioimaging techniques for observing living cells and thin tissue layers. We report a new reflection-mode ODT (rODT) method for imaging thick biological specimens with 500 nm lateral resolution and 1 {\mu}m axial resolution.

Consistency in the Assessment of Dried Blood Spot Specimen Size and Quality in U.K. Newborn Screening Laboratories

open access: yesInternational Journal of Neonatal Screening
In 2015, U.K. newborn screening (NBS) laboratory guidelines were introduced to standardize dried blood spot (DBS) specimen quality acceptance and specify a minimum acceptable DBS diameter of ≥7 mm. The UK ‘acceptable’ avoidable repeat rate (AVRR) is ≤2%.

Taxon and trait recognition from digitized herbarium specimens using deep convolutional neural networks [PDF]

open access: yesBotany Letters (2018) 1-7, 2018
Herbaria worldwide are housing a treasure of 100s of millions of herbarium specimens, which are increasingly being digitized in recent years and thereby made more easily accessible to the scientific community. At the same time, deep learning algorithms are rapidly improving pattern recognition from images and these techniques are more and more being ...

Blood-collection device for trace and ultra-trace metal specimens evaluated

open access: yesClinical Chemistry, 1991
Abstract We evaluated the evacuated phlebotomy tube designed specifically for trace metal analysis by Sherwood Medical Co. Pools of human serum containing known concentrations of aluminum, arsenic, calcium, cadmium, copper, chromium, iron, lead, magnesium, manganese, mercury, selenium, and zinc were exposed to the tube and rubber stopper

A hands-free stool sampling system for monitoring intestinal health and disease

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2022
Analysis of stool offers simple, non-invasive monitoring for many gastrointestinal (GI) diseases and access to the gut microbiome, however adherence to stool sampling protocols remains a major challenge because of the prevalent dislike of handling one’s ...

Use of blood specimens collected on filter paper in screening for abnormal hemoglobins.

open access: yesClinical Chemistry, 1976
Abstract Both cellulose acetate electrophoresis and citrate agar electrophoresis were performed on 834 blood samples collected on filter paper in Jamaica and shipped for testing to the National Hemoglobinopathy Standardization Laboratory at the U.S. National Center for Disease Control.
