TRANSFUSION THERAPY GUIDED BY BLOOD VOLUME DETERMINATIONS

Survey of Anesthesiology, 1962
Abstract Data are presented to demonstrate the accuracy and convenience of a new instrument for rapid, semiautomatic blood volume determination by radioactive tracer dilution and the usefulness of such determinations for guiding transfusion therapy in surgical patients.

Determination of Blood Volume in Nephrotic Patients

American Journal of Nephrology, 1989
We assessed blood volume (BV) in 20 edematous patients with nephrotic syndrome and in 32 subjects without renal or other disease liable to induce BV variation. Two methods were chosen, one using 131I-albumin and the other 51Cr red blood cells. Among the 20 patients, 11 presented minimal-change lesions, and 9 had histological glomerular impairment.

Whole Blood Volume Determinations

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1974
To the Editor. —The work of Valeri and Cooper ( Arch Intern Med 132: 534-538, 1973) shows well the problem of measuring plasma volume accurately with sodium chromate Cr 51 serum albumin. But the authors come to the unwarranted conclusion that the best method of determining whole blood volume is to measure only red blood cell (RBC) mass.

Whole Blood Volume Determinations-Reply

Archives of Internal Medicine, 1974
To the Editor. —As Dr. Willard noted, we measured the red blood cell (RBC) volume with sodium chromate Cr 51 autologous RBC only. There was no loss of 51 Cr-labeled autologous RBC during the one-hour post-infusion period in our patients without splenomegaly. With iodinated I 125 serum albumin, the plasma volume was overestimated in patients.

A Method of Blood Volume Determination

Acta Physiologica Scandinavica, 1940
Summary.A method of blood volume determination based on the determination of the dilution of labelled corpuscles is described. Radioactive sodium phosphate is administered to rabbit B; after the lapse of some days, a known blood sample of this rabbit is injected into the vein of rabbit A.

Problems of Blood Volume Determination

1969
Because of the great importance of the volume factor in the management of shock, mortality studies in animal experiments for evaluating the therapeutic effect of plasma substitutes in man should go hand in hand with exact methods for determination of blood volume.

Micro-determination of Insect Blood Volume

Nature, 1966
METHODS of estimating insect blood volume depend either on haemocyte counts before and after an injection of a measured volume of saline or on the dilution of amaranth dye by the haemolymph1. The latter method has been recommended for repeatable and consistent results with locusts2.
