Gonad maturity and gonadal somatic index of blue swimming crab Portunus pelagicus harvested from Spermonde Archipelago, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

open access: yesAceh Journal of Animal Science, 2021
Reproductive biology is one of the biological aspects that needed to formulate responsible management of blue swimming crab (BSC). The crab is one of the commercial fisheries commodities in South Sulawesi, Indonesia.

Acceleration of Blue Swimming Crab (Portunus pelagicus) Larval Development by Phytoecdysteroid

open access: yesAquacultura Indonesiana, 2015
Phytoecdysteroid is a mimic hormone like molt regulating hormone in arthropoda and crustacea.  This research aims to investigate the response of Portunus pelagicus larvae on various doses of vitomolt enrichment in predigested artificial diet.  Four doses of vitomolt (0; 4; 40; 400 mg/100 g artificial diet) were used in this research.

Refining techniques for high‐frequency monitoring of chlorophyll a fluorescence in estuarine systems

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, EarlyView.
Abstract Concentrations of the photosynthetic pigment chlorophyll a are commonly used as a proxy for phytoplankton biomass in aquatic systems. Traditional methods for extracting chlorophyll a in discrete samples limit measurement frequency, while in situ sensor technology provides high frequency chlorophyll a fluorescence measurements at a more ...

Limited capacity for rapid acclimation to marine heatwaves in coastal invertebrates

open access: yesJournal of Animal Ecology, EarlyView.
Across 10 coastal invertebrate species, we provide a rare multi‐species test of rapid acclimation to realistic marine heatwaves. Responses are consistently weak, revealing that short‐term plasticity cannot keep pace with warming and may lead to underestimated vulnerability in coastal ecosystems. Abstract Marine heatwaves are increasing in frequency and

Fishing Activity Affected Odontocete Cetacean Distribution in a Marine Protected Area in the East China Sea

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
Spatiotemporal distribution of odontocete cetaceans within China's Jiushan Archipelago National Nature Reserve was investigated. Fishing vessels significantly reduced both cetacean acoustic detections and feeding activity, whereas gillnets selectively suppressed cetacean feeding behavior without affecting overall cetacean detection rates.

Crushing and Cutting: Shape Variation and Morphological Integration Between the Claws of Two Swimming Crab Species (Brachyura: Portunidae)

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This study investigated shape variations and morphological integration between the components of crusher and cutter claws in two species of swimming crabs, Callinectes danae and Callinectes ornatus. The propodi and dactyli of the claws were analysed in males and females of both species, using geometric morphometric techniques to identify ...

Genome-wide SNP analyses reveal population structure of Portunus pelagicus along Vietnam coastline.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2019
The blue swimming crab (Portunus pelagicus Linnaeus, 1758) is one of the commercially exploited crab fishery resources in Vietnam. This is the first study to provide a broad survey of genetic diversity, population structure and migration patterns of P ...
