Genetic markers of obesity risk: stronger associations with body composition in overweight compared to normal-weight children. [PDF]
Genetic factors are important determinants of overweight. We examined whether there are differential effect sizes depending on children's body composition.

A Refined Method for Studying Foraging Behaviour and Body Mass in Group-Housed European Starlings
Laboratory experiments on passerine birds have been important for testing hypotheses regarding the effects of environmental variables on the adaptive regulation of body mass.

The optimum body mass of passerine birds typically represents a trade‐off between starvation risk, which promotes fat gain, and predation pressure, which promotes fat loss to maintain maneuvrability.

Background: Recently we provided evidence for a leptin-independent homeostatic regulation, the gravitostat, of body weight in rodents. The aim of the present translational proof of concept study was to test the gravitostat hypothesis in humans.

Does lower-body BMD develop at the expense of upper-body BMD in female runners? [PDF]
PURPOSE: Evidence suggests that exercise plays an important role in stimulating site-specific bone mineral density (BMD). However, what is less well understood is how these benefits dissipate throughout the body.

With a relatively large surface area (2 m2) and 15% of total body mass, the skin forms the largest organ of the human body. The main functions of the skin include regulation of body temperature by insulation or sweating, regulation of the nervous system,

Weighing the evidence for a body mass-regulating gravitostat [PDF]
The intriguing paper by Jansson et al. (1) reports the identification of a body mass-regulating homeostat that operates in rodents independently of leptin. In response to implantation of capsules weighing 15% of body weight the authors observed that ∼80% of this load was offset by a reduction in biological body weight.

The association of a SNP upstream of INSIG2 with body mass index is reproduced in several but not all cohorts [PDF]
A SNP upstream of the INSIG2 gene, rs7566605, was recently found to be associated with obesity as measured by body mass index (BMI) by Herbert and colleagues.
