Development of Perceived Body Size and Dieting Awareness in Young Girls

To examine longitudinally figure-rating preferences and dieting awareness in young girls a sample of 40 Australian girls, ages 5 to 7 years ( M = 6.5, SD = 0.9), were recruited from two single-sex private schools in Adelaide. Girls were tested at both Time 1 (mid 2002) and Time 2 (late 2003), approximately 16 months apart.

The effect of alcohol on body size discrepancy and self-awareness in young women

Research has repeatedly verified high co-prevalence rates for bulimia and alcohol abuse. Two heuristics may help explain this co-occurrence. The self-inflation component of Steele and Josephs' myopia model has been evaluated and results have indicated that alcohol consumption results in decreased self-discrepancy.

Alice in Wonderland: The effects of body size and movement on children’s size perception and bodily awareness in virtual reality

In adults, illusory embodiment of a virtual avatar can be induced using synchronous visuomotor cues. Further, embodying different-sized avatars influences adults’ perception of their environment’s size. This study (N=92) investigated whether children are also susceptible to such embodiment and size illusions.
