Genomics Reveal Population Crash and Range Contraction in Elusive Fijian Hylaeus Bees

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
We used a novel paired low‐lying and canopy sampling technique with genomic data to assess the recently discovered canopy‐specialist Fijian Hylaeus bee clade. We found major (~99%) declines in population size since European colonisation, limited contemporary distributions and inter‐island genetic structuring.

Identification and functional characterisation of a novel N-cyanoamidine neonicotinoid metabolising cytochrome P450, CYP9Q6, from the buff-tailed bumblebee Bombus terrestris [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Recent work has shown that two bumblebee (Bombus terrestris) cytochrome P450s of the CYP9Q subfamily, CYP9Q4 and CYP9Q5, are important biochemical determinants of sensitivity to neonicotinoid insecticides.

Wild Bee Conservation: Habitat Heterogeneity and Ecological Improvement in Agricultural Land With Open Grassland

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
Here, we investigated the effects of different levels of habitat heterogeneity and of ecological improvement of habitat to increase foraging resources on wild bee communities in Austria and Luxembourg. We found that ecological improvement was important in Luxembourg for species richness and abundance but less so in Austria; here, habitat heterogeneity ...

Proximity to wind turbines altered plant–pollinator dynamics in prairie and sagebrush ecosystems in Wyoming, USA

open access: yesNordic Journal of Botany, Volume 2026, Issue 10, October 2026.
Wind turbines influence several abiotic conditions in the environments they are sited in and may influence the behavior and movement of insect pollinators. It is unknown how operating turbines influence plant–pollinator interactions. To investigate if pollination dynamics could be affected by the presence of wind turbines, we recorded videos of ...

How do insects pollinate flowers? Behaviour during visitation determines high pollination efficiency by a generalist insect

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 10, Page 3213-3224, October 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Ecosystem services provide essential benefits to human survival and well‐being. Animal behaviour is central to the delivery of many ecosystem services, yet we know little about how behaviour drives services' provision.

Synergistic effect of honeybees and wild floral visitors in promoting sweet cherry fruit set in central Chile

open access: yesBiological Research
Background Recent evidence highlights the key role of wild insects as pollinators in agroecosystems, enhancing fruit set in crops such as sweet cherry (Prunus avium). In Chile, the contribution of wild insects to crop yield remains poorly understood, and

Warming and community context drive rapid plant evolution

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 10, Page 3161-3175, October 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Abiotic and biotic factors are important drivers of plant evolution, but how these factors interact to influence plant evolution in multispecies communities is still poorly understood. We performed experimental evolution exposing Brassica rapa plants to a combination of
