BumbleBEEP: A Sensor System for Bumblebee Colony Monitoring

open access: yesEntomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, Volume 174, Issue 10, Page 1268-1274, October 2026.
We present a bumblebee colony monitoring system, BumbleBEEP. The system is fitted with thermometers and a custom weight sensor. These record data up to every 15 min, recording bumblebee brood nest temperature, environmental ambient temperature, and colony growth.

Air pollution modifies colonisation factors in beneficial symbiont Snodgrassella and disrupts the bumblebee gut microbiome

open access: yesnpj Biofilms and Microbiomes
Particulate air pollutants, a major air pollution component, are detrimental to human health and a significant risk to wildlife and ecosystems globally. Here we report the effects of particulate pollutant black carbon on the beneficial gut microbiome of ...

Nutritional composition of pollen stores in managed bees across European agro‐ecosystems reveals species‐specific differences but limited pesticide effects

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 5, Page 853-865, October 2026.
In the pollen stores of three bee species deployed across 128 European sites, bumble bees harboured lower lipid content and higher protein‐to‐lipid ratios than honey bees and mason bees. Toxicity‐weighted pesticide risk did not alter protein‐to‐lipid ratios, but higher risk was associated with reduced protein and lipid content in the pollen stores of ...

Unterschiede in der Kastendetermination zwischen den Hummelarten Bombus hypnorum und Bombus terrestris / Differences in the Caste Determination between the Bumblebee Species Bombus hypnorum and Bombus terrestris

open access: yesZeitschrift für Naturforschung B, 1970
In colonies of Bombus hypnorum reared in captivity all intermediate body sizes between worker and queen are produced, the body size being determined by the amount of food for the larvae. Queens are produced, if the larvae are fed sufficiently. In captivity queens are produced at every time of the colony development, if one worker has to feed only two ...

Eusocial bee species are exposed to different toxic element profiles despite foraging within the same landscape

open access: yesEcological Entomology, Volume 51, Issue 5, Page 912-925, October 2026.
Bombus terrestris and Apis mellifera colonies sharing the same landscape (<50 m from each other) collected pollen with significantly different heavy metal concentrations. B. terrestris‐collected pollen contained 2–7× higher concentrations of arsenic, chromium, cobalt, lead and tin than A. mellifera‐collected pollen.

Status and monitoring of the buff-tailed bumblebee Bombus terrestris Linnaeus (Hymenoptera: Apidae) in Southern Finland [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Bombus terrestris can cause pollination disturbance in native plants and compete with native bumblebees and other pollinators. The accompanying non-native parasites may also threaten native bees. We report new observations of the commercially used Bombus

Niche analyses and the potential distribution of four invasive bumblebees worldwide

open access: yesEcology and Evolution
The introduction of bees for agricultural production in distinct parts of the world and poor management have led to invasion processes that affect biodiversity, significantly impacting native species. Different Bombus species with invasive potential have

Regular periods of abdominal contractions recorded from larvae of the bumblebee, Bombus terrestris (Hymenoptera: Apidae)

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Entomology, 2006
Using an opto-cardiograph combined with an infrared gas analyzer regular bouts of abdominal contractions were recorded from last instar larva of Bombus terrestris. The rate of CO2 release was about 0.7 ml g-1 h-1.

Root‐sourced 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylic acid modulates development and adaptive responses to salinity in tomato

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 128, Issue 1, October 2026.
SUMMARY To investigate whether root‐sourced ethylene‐precursor 1‐aminocyclopropane‐1‐carboxylic acid (ACC) modulates long‐term salinity responses in tomato, a commercial variety (Solanum lycopersicum L. Mill) was grafted onto three rootstocks differing in ACC/ethylene production: an ethylene‐overproducing mutant (epinastic, epi), a root‐specific ACC ...
