Si Inhibited Osteoclastogenesis: The Role of Fe and the Fenton Reaction

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Silicate (Si) inhibition of osteoclastogenesis, is mediated by Fe. Si chemical interactions with Fe inhibit the Fenton reaction and intercellular ROS availability. This reduction in ROS availability inhibits osteoclastogenesis. The addition of Fe, in Si‐inhibited osteoclast cultures, restores the Fenton reaction, and osteoclastogenesis.

Spinal aneurysmal bone cysts – case series [PDF]

open access: yesFolia Medica
Aneurysmal bone cysts are benign neoplastic lesions that are extensively vascularized and can occasionally exhibit destructive and expanding activity. They typically affect young people, with a small predilection toward females, and most frequently arise

Domain knowledge assisted cyst segmentation in OCT retinal images [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
3D imaging modalities are becoming increasingly popular and relevant in retinal imaging owing to their effectiveness in highlighting structures in sub-retinal layers. OCT is one such modality which has great importance in the context of analysis of cystoid structures in subretinal layers.

Immunosuppressive Formulations for Immunological Defense against Traumatic Brain Injury

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A novel subcutaneous formulation combining alpha‐ketoglutarate, glycolysis inhibitor PFK15, and a myelin peptide reduces inflammation in a mouse TBI model. This formulation promotes regulatory immune cells, enhances autophagy, and improves motor function, suggesting its potential as a prophylactic immunosuppressive therapy to mitigate TBI‐induced ...

Small molecule-mediated tribbles homolog 3 promotes bone formation induced by bone morphogenetic protein-2. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Although bone morphogenetic protein-2 (BMP2) has demonstrated extraordinary potential in bone formation, its clinical applications require supraphysiological milligram-level doses that increase postoperative inflammation and inappropriate adipogenesis ...

Deep Supervision for Pancreatic Cyst Segmentation in Abdominal CT Scans [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
Automatic segmentation of an organ and its cystic region is a prerequisite of computer-aided diagnosis. In this paper, we focus on pancreatic cyst segmentation in abdominal CT scan. This task is important and very useful in clinical practice yet challenging due to the low contrast in boundary, the variability in location, shape and the different stages

From Mechanoelectric Conversion to Tissue Regeneration: Translational Progress in Piezoelectric Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review highlights recent progress in piezoelectric materials for regenerative medicine, emphasizing their ability to convert mechanical stimuli into bioelectric signals that promote tissue repair. Key discussions cover the intrinsic piezoelectric properties of biological tissues, co‐stimulation cellular mechanisms for tissue regeneration, and ...

Cortical AAV-CNTF gene therapy combined with intraspinal mesenchymal precursor cell transplantation promotes functional and morphological outcomes after spinal cord injury in adult rats [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) promotes survival and enhances long-distance regeneration of injured axons in parts of the adult CNS. Here we tested whether CNTF gene therapy targeting corticospinal neurons (CSN) in motor-related regions of the ...

Meniscal extrusion predicts increases in subchondral bone marrow lesions and bone cysts and expansion of subchondral bone in osteoarthritic knees.

open access: yesRheumatology, 2010
OBJECTIVES Meniscal extrusion is often present in knees with OA, and has been associated with cartilage changes. It is unknown whether meniscal extrusion is related to subchondral bone.
