Repair of Skull Defects With Autogenous Bone
Archives of Surgery, 1972Twenty-two major skull reconstructions were done using autogenous rib or iliac bone. When bone from the rib was used, it was split and wired in place over a bony lip formed at the edge of the defect. Iliac crest was fitted as a keystone in an arch and fastened with wire.

Skeletal Defects A Comparison of Bone Grafting and Bone Transport for Segmental Skeletal Defects
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1994To evaluate two different methods of managing segmental skeletal defects, 15 patients treated with the open bone graft (Papineau) technique were compared with 17 patients who had intercalary bone transport (Ilizarov) management. The treatment time was identical for both groups: 1.9 months in fixation for each centimeter of defect reconstructed.

Classification of Bone Defects
2002An easy-to-use classification system that pinpoints the extent and location of bone damage helps surgeons plan efficiently for revision total knee surgery. Preoperative radiographs should be used to classify such bone defects into categories of comparable difficulty.

Management of traumatic bone defects: Metaphyseal versus diaphyseal defects
Injury, 2017Although bone defects after trauma appear in different locations and forms, many clinicians have adopted a single strategy to deal with any defect. In this overview, a distinction is made between metaphyseal, or cancellous defects, and diaphyseal, or cortical defects.

Reconstruction of Bone Defects
1991Today, thanks to more precise histological classifications and more detailed surgical staging, conservative operations of bone tumors are ever more frequent. Consequently, there is a growing need to reconstruct longer and larger portions of skeletal segments. Resected bone tissue can be restored by various techniques: 1.

The management of bone defects
Current Orthopaedics, 1994Bone detects may be the result of acute bone loss due to trauma or surgical resection for disease. In either situation management is difficult particularly if there is an associated soft tissue defect. Conventional treatment strategies include massive or repeated autogenous bone grafting and microvascular transfer.
