Trabecular bone microarchitecture: A review
SummaryThe bone mass is constituted during the life by the modeling and remodeling mechanisms. Trabecular bone consists in a network of trabeculae (plates and rods) whose distribution is highly anisotropic: trabeculae are disposed parallel to the ...

Bone microarchitecture evaluated by histomorphometry
The increasing use of densitometric devices for assessing bone fragility has progressively strengthened the assumption that mass is the most important property determining bone mechanical competence.

Effects of microarchitecture on bone strength
Current Osteoporosis Reports, 2007Bone strength and stiffness depend strongly on bone mass, but they also depend on the microarchitecture and tissue quality of both cancellous and cortical bone. All these aspects differ between individuals and between anatomic sites. This review discusses ways to characterize the three-dimensional cancellous architecture as well as changes in ...

Spatial modeling of bone microarchitecture
SPIE Proceedings, 2012We develop and evaluate a novel 3D computational bone framework, which is capable of enabling quantitative assessment of bone micro-architecture, bone mineral density and fracture risks. Our model for bone mineral is developed and its parameters are estimated from imaging data obtained with dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and x-ray imaging methods.
