Higher fracture prevalence and smaller bone size in patients with hEDS/HSD-a prospective cohort study

open access: yes, 2020
Increased fracture risk in patients with Ehlers-Danlos syndromes has been reported, but the reasons for it are incompletely understood. We aimed to investigate possible determinants of this increased risk and found that hEDS/HSD patients present with a ...

Longer Acting Injectable: Continuous, Linear Release of a Progestin Contraceptive From an Oxidized Porous Silicon Host

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Progestin drugs are loaded into a mesoporous silicon dioxide host by melt‐infiltration. Drugs that decompose at or close to their melting point can be loaded by the addition of cholesterol, which acts as a melting point suppressor. High mass loading of the drug is achieved, and dissolution of the composite is controlled by the nanoscale properties of ...

Dexamethasone Delivery via Amphiphilic, Low‐swelling Hydrogels Treats Postoperative Inflammation in Cervical Spine Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 14, Issue 7, March 14, 2025.
DexaPatch, an implantable, low‐swelling amphiphilic hydrogel system containing dexamethasone‐PLGA microparticles, is developed and characterized for sustained local steroid release to reduce postoperative inflammation in tight surgical spaces. DexaPatch significantly reduces postoperative edema and fibrosis in a rabbit model of anterior spinal surgery,

Inhibition of Acid Phosphatase Enzyme Activity in the Presence of Noncrystalline Calcium Phosphate and Nanocrystalline Calcium Apatite: a Preliminary Study [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
*Background* Our bones are remodelled repeatedly during life. A new and “healthy” bone tissue replaces the old one. Accordingly, the bone degrading cells, the osteoclasts, prefer old and fatigued bone.

Glucocorticoids Alter Bone Microvascular Barrier via MAPK/Connexin43 Mechanisms

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, Volume 14, Issue 7, March 14, 2025.
Osteoporosis induced by Glucocorticoids (GCs) is a common complication of long‐term GC use in patients with inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, often leading to an increased fracture risk. A 3D bicellular endo‐osteo microfluidic platform is developed to explore pathogenic mechanisms underlying GCs‐induced osteoporosis, highlighting a novel MAPK ...

TPMS‐Gyroid Scaffold‐Mediated Up‐Regulation of ITGB1 for Enhanced Cell Adhesion and Immune‐Modulatory Osteogenesis

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
A) SLM generates biomimetic bone scaffolds with consistent porosity but varying TPMS‐Gyroid unit cell designs (TG15, TG20, TG25, TG30). B) By enhancing the expression of ITGB1, TPMS‐Gyroid scaffolds can facilitate osteogenic differentiation in BMSCs and promote M2 polarization in macrophages.

Kinetic measurements of bone mineral metabolism: The use of Na-22 as a tracer for long-term bone mineral turnover studies [PDF]

open access: yes
Sodium-22 was studied as a tracer for bone mineral metabolism in rats and dogs. When incorporated into bone during growth from birth to adulthood, the bone becomes uniformly tagged with (22)Na which is released through the metabolic turnover of the bone.

Does a Novice Technician Produce Results Similar to That of an Experienced DXA Technician When Assessing Body Composition and Bone Mineral Density? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry is a commonly used clinical assessment tool for body composition and bone mineral density, which is gaining popularity in athletic cohorts.

Implementing BMP‐7 Chemically Modified RNA for Bone Regeneration with 3D Printable Hyaluronic Acid‐Collagen Granular Gels

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study developed 3D‐printable THA‐Col microgels for delivering BMP‐7 cmRNA. The key result is that hMSCs transfected on the biomaterials showed BMP‐7 secretion levels comparable to pre‐transfected hMSCs, therefore introducing a cmRNA‐activated matrix to promote bone healing.
