An Advanced VOF Algorithm for Oil Boom Design
International Journal of Modelling and Simulation, 2006In this paper, an accurate interface convection technique based on the volume-of-fluid (VOF) scheme is presented and the concepts of interface basis and three types of fluxes are introduced to handle two-layer fluid flow in complex geometric situations. The scheme was tested and the results proved to be accurate.

Sonic Boom Minimization Revisited: The Robustness of Optimal Low-Boom Designs
13th AIAA/ISSMO Multidisciplinary Analysis Optimization Conference, 2010This paper will review the currently-accepted theory of sonic boom prediction and minimization and will propose a new modified approach that overcomes some of the limitations of the classical theory. In particular, the new approach differs from the classical theory of Jones, Seebass, George, and Darden in that: (1) it generalizes the parameterization ...

Research on a sonic boom evaluation and low-boom and low-drag design
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. has been researching on a sonic boom since 1990 toward the development of the next-generation SST (super sonic transport). A small chamber where a similar-sonic-boom could be created was made in 1993, and over 200 tests were carried out to see the reaction of people inside the chamber.

Design of aluminium boom and arm for an excavator
Journal of Terramechanics, 2010Abstract The aim of this work is to study the boom and the arm of an excavator in order to replace the material, which they are usually made of, with another material. In particular, the study wants to substitute the steel alloy for an aluminium alloy.

Hydraulic Excavator Boom Lightweight Design
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2014Regarding 20 tons hydraulic excavator boom in an enterprise as the research object, the boom volume was set as an optimized object. According to the dynamic simulation analysis of working device in typical working conditions, constraint conditions including the maximum stress, displacement range and thickness variable ranges of each steel plate, were ...

Modeling and Simulation Technologies Conference, 2000
Z-SAT uses passive gravity-gradient, along with active magnetorquer stabilization methods to control of attitude. To modify the ratios of moments of inertia, control boom has been selected. It is a deployable mechanism. Several restrictions, such as stability, strength, and thermal distortion, have been considered to optimum design.

Concept Design of Deployable Isogrid Booms
52nd AIAA/ASME/ASCE/AHS/ASC Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Conference, 2011This paper describes concepts of deployable open isogrid booms that may enable the development of space structures such as solar sails and large antennas to dimensions of hundreds of meters. The paper examines previous efforts funded by NASA developing deployable isogrid booms and describes their limitations.

Approximation of Off-Body Sonic-Boom Analysis for Low-Boom Conceptual Design
Journal of Aircraft, 2016The conceptual design of a low-boom and low-drag supersonic aircraft remains a challenge despite significant progress in recent years. Inverse design using reversed equivalent area and adjoint methods has been demonstrated to be effective in shaping the ground signature propagated from computational fluid dynamics off-body-pressure distributions ...

Observer design for boom cranes with double-pendulum effect
2009 IEEE Control Applications, (CCA) & Intelligent Control, (ISIC), 2009Under certain conditions the payload oscillation inherent to all crane systems cannot be described by a single-pendulum but shows a double-pendulum like behavior. In that case anti-sway concepts have to be adapted to the new system. For the here given application case the rope angles of the double-pendulum have to be reconstructed out of gyroscope ...
