Variability in Fire Frequency and Forest Composition in Canada's Southeastern Boreal Forest: A Challenge for Sustainable Forest Management

open access: yesEcology and Society, 1998
Because some consequences of fire resemble the effects of industrial forest harvesting, forest management is often considered as a disturbance having effects similar to those of natural disturbances.

Multifunctional Design of Solid Polymer Electrolytes: Paving the Way for High‐Performance All‐Solid‐State Batteries

open access: yesCarbon Energy, EarlyView.
This review provides a comprehensive and systematic overview of the multifunctional design strategies for solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs), a pivotal component for enabling high‐performance all‐solid‐state batteries (ASSBs). It begins with a detailed classification of SPE systems and elaborates on their respective molecular design principles. The work

Photoinduced Hydrogenative Dearomatization With Homocoupling of Quinolines to Construct Octahydro‐4,4'‐biquinolines

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
Dearomative homocoupling of quinolines into 1,1',2,2',3,3',4,4'‐octahydro‐4,4'‐biquinoline (OHBQ) is reported. The photoexcited boron complex, in situ generated from quinoline, HB(pin), and KOtBu, enables the unprecedented homocoupling of tetrahydroquinolines that is challenging in the ground state, expanding the chemical diversity of OHBQ derivatives.

Restoration of endangered epiphytic lichens in fragmented forest landscapes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
In a situation with increasingly rapid changes in landscape mosaics, driven by large-scale forestry and future climate change, a number of epiphytic lichens are now becoming threatened.

A review on rockburst prediction and prevention to shape an ontology‐based framework for better decision‐making for underground excavations

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A scientometric analysis of 2449 journal articles and a comprehensive review of 336 papers were conducted, discussing and identifying challenges and research gaps in rockburst prediction and prevention and proposing an ontology‐based framework for better decision‐making in underground excavations. Abstract With underground engineering projects becoming

Carbon emission assessment of tunnel infrastructures: From construction to operation

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study develops a lifecycle carbon accounting framework for tunnel infrastructures, covering design, construction, operation, maintenance, and dismantling. Applied to a subsea tunnel case, the framework reveals the carbon emission distribution among four typical tunnel types and highlights potential carbon offset methods for low‐carbon tunnel ...
