Phase Field Failure Modeling: Brittle‐Ductile Dual‐Phase Microstructures under Compressive Loading

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The approach by Amor and the approach by Miehe and Zhang for asymmetric damage behavior in the phase field method for fracture are compared regarding their fitness for microcrack‐based failure modeling. The comparison is performed for the case of a dual‐phase microstructure with a brittle and a ductile constituent.

Probing the Synthesis of Two-Dimensional Boron by First-Principles Computations

open access: yes, 2013
Boron synthesis, in theory: Although two-dimensional boron sheets have attracted considerable interest because of their theoretically predicted properties, synthesis of such sheets remains a challenge.

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...

Effect of Boron substitution on the superconductivity of non-oxide perovskite MgCNi3

open access: yes, 2012
We report synthesis, structural and magnetic (DC and AC) properties of Boron substituted MgCNi3 superconductor. A series of polycrystalline bulk samples Mg1.2C1.6-xBxNi3 (x = 0.0, 0.08 and 0.16) is synthesized through standard solid-state reaction route,

High‐Temperature Nanoindentation of Metals: Assessing Thermal Drift, Frame Compliance, and Chemical Composition Effects on the Reported Mechanical Properties

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Do not let thermal drift and instrument artifacts deceive high‐temperature nanoindentation results. We compare classical Oliver–Pharr and automatic image recognition analyses across steels and a Ni alloy to quantify these effects. Accounting for artifacts reveals systematic softening with temperature, while Cr and Ni additions boost resistance ...

Metal‐Free Synthesis of 1,3‐Divinylimidazolidin‐2‐One

open access: yesChemistryOpen
A new one‐pot synthesis of 1,3‐divinylimidazolidin‐2‐one (DVI) starting from cheap and commercially available substances, i.e., di(chloroethyl)amine and phosgene or triphosgene was developed.

Advancements in the investigation of radioactive microspheres for brachytherapy

open access: yesFrontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology
In clinical practice, the management of most non-surgically resectable solid tumors necessitates a multidisciplinary treatment approach. Optimal solutions involve the integration of local and systemic treatments, such as targeted immunotherapy and ...

An Experimental High‐Throughput Approach for the Screening of Hard Magnet Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
An entire workflow for the high‐throughput characterization and analysis of compositionally graded magnetic films is presented. Characterization protocols, data management tools and data analysis approaches are illustrated with test case Sm(Fe, V)12 based films.

Testing Rotational Mixing Predictions with New Boron Abundances in Main Sequence B-type Stars

open access: yes, 2005
(Abridged) New boron abundances for seven main-sequence B-type stars are determined from HST STIS spectroscopy around the BIII 2066A line. Boron abundances provide a unique and critical test of stellar evolution models that include rotational mixing ...
