Variations in Ixodes ricinus Density and Borrelia Infections Associated with Cattle Introduced into a Woodland in The Netherlands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
The effect of introduced large herbivores on the abundance of Ixodes ricinus ticks and their Borrelia infections was studied in a natural woodland in The Netherlands. Oak and pine plots, either ungrazed or grazed by cattle, were selected.

Identification of a third genomic group of Borrelia burgdorferi through signature nucleotide analysis and 16S rRNA sequence determination [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of General Microbiology, 1992
As part of a continuing effort to assess genetic variation among isolates of Borrelia burgdorferi we have determined the 16S rRNA signature nucleotide makeup of two tick isolates from the USSR. Signature nucleotides were identified via reverse transcriptase primer extension sequencing of select regions of the 16S rRNA molecule.

Comparison of Lyme Disease in the United States and Europe

open access: yesEmerging Infectious Diseases, 2021
Lyme disease, or Lyme borreliosis, is the most common tickborne disease in the United States and Europe. In both locations, Ixodes species ticks transmit the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato bacteria species responsible for causing the infection.

Disparity Between Serological Reactivity toBorrelia burgdorferiand Evidence of Past Disease in a High‐Risk Group [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 1998
A prevalence study of past Lyme borreliosis in persons with outdoor occupations was done. Consenting individuals (n = 302) were administered a questionnaire eliciting demographic and occupational data and a clinical history, and were asked to donate a serum specimen for detection of antibodies to Borrelia burgdorferi by enzyme-linked immunosorbent ...

A Novel Genospecies of Borrelia burgdorferi Sensu Lato Associated with Cricetid Rodents in Brazil

open access: yesMicroorganisms, 2022
Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl) spirochetes thrive in sylvatic transmission cycles infecting vertebrates and their ticks. Rodents and ticks of the genus Ixodes are important hosts of these spirochetes globally.

Bartonella infections in fleas (Siphonaptera : Pulicidae) and lack of Bartonellae in ticks (Acari : Ixodidae) from Hungary [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Fleas (95 Pulex irritans, 50 Ctenocephalides felis, 45 Ctenocephalides canis) and ixodid ticks (223 Ixodes ricinus, 231 Dermacentor reticulatus, 204 Haemaphysalis concinna) were collected in Hungary and tested, in assays based on PCR, for Bartonella ...

Possible effect of mutations on serological detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto ospC major groups: An in-silico study

open access: yesPLOS ONE, 2023
The outer surface protein C (OspC) of the agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto, is a major lipoprotein surface-expressed during early-phase human infections. Antibodies to OspC are used in serological diagnoses. This study explored the hypothesis that serological test sensitivity decreases as genetic similarity of ospC major groups

Prevalence and molecular identification of Borrelia spirochetes in Ixodes granulatus ticks collected from Rattus losea on Kinmen Island of Taiwan

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2012
Background Ixodes granulatus is widely distributed in various countries of Southeast Asia and Taiwan. Although this tick species is presumed to be the vector for the enzoonotic transmission of Borrelia spirochetes in the Taiwan area, the prevalence of ...

Lyme Borreliosis During Pregnancy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
One of the authors (AL) presented a poster on 34 pregnancies of maternal Lyme borreliosis (Lb) in 1995. It was striking that untreated Lb associated with higher probability of adverse outcome but the number of patients were small and the statistical ...

Detection of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and spotted fever group rickettsiae in hard ticks (Acari, Ixodidae) parasitizing bats in Poland [PDF]

open access: yesParasitology Research, 2016
(Uploaded by Plazi for the Bat Literature Project) A total of 491 Ixodes vespertilionis and 8 Ixodes ricinus collected from bats and cave walls in southern Poland between 2010 and 2012 were examined by the polymerase chain reaction for tick-transmitted pathogens. PCR analysis for Borrelia burgdorferi s.l., Rickettsia spp., and Anaplasma phagocytophilum
