Detection of Borrelia garinii in the USA

bioRxiv, 2022
AbstractBorrelia garinii, is a cause of Lyme disease in Europe and Asia. For the first time, we report it in the southeastern United States in rodents. Whole genome sequencing and phylogenetic analysis revealed that USA-located B. garinii is part of a clade consisting primarily of few European and majority of Far Eastern strains. Continued surveillance

Comparison of findings for patients with Borrelia garinii and Borrelia afzelii isolated from cerebrospinal fluid. [PDF]

open access: yesClinical Infectious Diseases, 2006
The most common cause of Lyme neuroborreliosis in Europe is Borrelia garinii, followed by Borrelia afzelii. However, no series describing patients with culture-confirmed cases of Lyme neuroborreliosis have been published, and no comparison of findings for patients with B. garinii and B.

Seronegative Lyme Arthritis caused by Borrelia garinii

Clinical Rheumatology, 2002
A case of a female patient suffering from Lyme arthritis (LA) without elevated antibody levels to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is reported. Seronegative Lyme arthritis was diagnosed based on the classic clinical manifestations and DNA-detected Borrelia garinii in blood and synovial fluid of the patient, after all other possible causes of the disease

Short-term stability of Borrelia garinii in cerebrospinal fluid

Folia Microbiologica, 2015
The aim of our study was to find out the optimal conditions for short-term storage of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples for direct diagnosis of Lyme disease. A mixture of Borrelia-negative CSFs spiked with a defined amount of cultured Borrelia garinii was used.

Characteristics of Erythema migrans in Borrelia afzelii and Borrelia garinii Infections

Scandinavian Journal of Infectious Diseases, 2003
Erythema migrans is the most common manifestation of stage I Lyme borreliosis. This study investigated the relation between the subspecies of Borrelia burgdorferi involved, the time of development and the appearance of the manifestation. The study comprised 33 cases of erythema migrans yielding B. burgdorferi sensu lato by culture of skin biopsy.

Occurrence of Borrelia garinii oculo-neuroborreliosis in Japan

Journal of the Neurological Sciences, 1996
We report a 64-year-old Japanese man with oculo-neuroborreliosis. His clinical features consisted of polyarthralgia, keratoconjunctivitis, chorioretinitis, optic neuritis, confusion, and polyradiculitis. Assay of antibodies to Borrelia species detected IgG-antibody to B. garinii in both serum and CSF.

Core genome phylogenetic analysis of the avian associated Borrelia turdi indicates a close relationship to Borrelia garinii.

Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution, 2019
Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato comprises a species complex of tick-transmitted bacteria that includes the agents of human Lyme borreliosis. Borrelia turdi is a genospecies of this complex that exists in cryptic transmission cycles mainly between ornithophilic tick vectors and their avian hosts.
