Lyme Disease and New Molecular Biological Detection Methods [PDF]
Molecular biology plays an important role in understanding the structures, functions and internal controls within each cell. All this can be used to diagnose the diseases, effectively target new medicines and better understand cellular physiology.

Comparative analysis of the Borrelia garinii genome [PDF]
Three members of the genus Borrelia (B.burgdorferi, B.garinii, B.afzelii) cause tick-borne borreliosis. Depending on the Borrelia species involved, the borreliosis differs in its clinical symptoms. Comparative genomics opens up a way to elucidate the underlying differences in Borrelia species.

Lyme disease is a tick-borne infectious disease caused by the Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato complex. However, the distribution of Borrelia genospecies and the tissue detection rate of Borrelia in wild rodents have rarely been investigated.

Genome Sequence of Borrelia garinii Strain NMJW1, Isolated from China [PDF]
ABSTRACT We announce the draft genome sequence of Borrelia garinii strain NMJW1, isolated from Ixodes persulcatus in northeastern China. The 902,789-bp linear chromosome (28.4% GC content) contains 813 open reading frames, 33 tRNAs, and 4 complete rRNAs.

Biology of Borrelia garinii Spirochetes
Lyme borreliosis is a tick-transmitted infectious disease. The causative agents are spiral-shaped bacteria and the most common sign of infection is a skin rash at the site of the tick bite. If not treated with antibiotics, the bacteria can disseminate and cause a variety of different manifestations including arthritis, carditis or neurological problems.

Characteristics of spirochetemic patients with a solitary erythema migrans skin lesion in Europe.
Neither pre-treatment characteristics, nor the outcome after antibiotic therapy, have been reported for spirochetemic European patients with Lyme borreliosis.

Ability to cause erythema migrans differs between Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato isolates [PDF]
Background: Lyme borreliosis is a tick-borne disease caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. The variety of characteristic and non-specific clinical manifestations is partially explained by its genetic diversity.

The Borrelia afzelii outer membrane protein BAPKO_0422 binds human Factor-H and is predicted to form a membrane-spanning beta-barrel [PDF]
The deep evolutionary history of the Spirochetes places their branch point early in the evolution of the diderms, before the divergence of the present day Proteobacteria.

Vitronectin binding protein, BOM1093, confers serum resistance on Borrelia miyamotoi
Borrelia miyamotoi, a member of the tick-borne relapsing fever spirochetes, shows a serum-resistant phenotype in vitro. This ability of B. miyamotoi may contribute to bacterial evasion of the host innate immune system.
