Reactivation of Borrelia infection in birds
Nature, 2000Birds often carry ticks infected with Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato 1 — the spirochaete that causes Lyme disease — but their role as possible hosts and amplifiers for this illness has long been discounted. We find, however, that migratory birds are able to carry Lyme disease as a latent infection for several months, and that this infection can be ...

Asymptomatic Borrelia burgdorferi infection
Medical Hypotheses, 2001Little is known about the natural history of asymptomatic Borrelia burgdorferi infection. Our analysis of the asymptomatic infections diagnosed serologically in a recent OspA vaccine trial conducted in the United States (N Engl J Med 1998;339: 209-215), suggests that the natural history of this event is more benign than that reported for untreated ...

Epidemiology of Borrelia infections in Austria
Zentralblatt für Bakteriologie, Mikrobiologie und Hygiene. Series A: Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases, Virology, Parasitology, 1987From April 1984 to July 1985 873 cases of Borrelia infections were registered at the Hygiene Institute of the University of Vienna. 2609 serum samples of these patients were investigated for antibodies against B. burgdorferi by means of IFA- and ELISA-tests.

Routine diagnosis of Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) infections using a real-time PCR assay
ObjectiveTo establish a one-tube fluorogenic real-time PCR assay for routine detection of Borrelia burgdorferi (sensu lato) DNA in various clinical specimens.MethodsA fragment of the flagellin gene sequence was amplified with the TaqMan chemistry using ...

Arthritogenicity of Borrelia burgdorferi and Borrelia garinii: Comparison of Infection in Mice
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 2009Arthritogenicity, as determined by joint swelling and synovial histology, was compared between or within two Borrelia genospecies that cause Lyme arthritis in humans. The spirochete burden in bladder tissue (a site of spirochete persistence) was documented by quantitative polymerase chain reaction, and immune responses were analyzed.

Occurrence of Borrelia lusitaniae infection in horses
Veterinary Microbiology, 2012The aim of the study was to investigate Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) infection in horses exposed to heavy tick infestations. Blood samples of 98 healthy horses from 5 stud farms were examined by SNAP(®) 4D× and PCR to detect antibodies against B. burgdorferi s.l. and Borrelia DNA, respectively. Ten samples (15.3%) were antibody positive and 5

The versatile roles of antibodies in Borrelia infections
Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2005Antibodies are the primary weapons of the mammalian immune system that are used against the tick-borne borreliae, the causative agents of relapsing fever and Lyme disease worldwide. Some antibody responses have 'traditional' functions, whereas others are more versatile and have novel functions and modes of action.

Granuloma annulare – a manifestation of infection with Borrelia?
Journal of Cutaneous Pathology, 2008Background: Among the theories of origin of granuloma annulare (GA) are those of infection. Reports gave raise to the assumption that there is evidence for Borrelia as the causing agent. Methods: To assess the evidence for infection with Borrelia in GA, tissue sections were stained with a polyclonal Borrelia antibody.

Experimental infection of dogs with Borrelia burgdorferi
Research in Veterinary Science, 1994Four beagle dogs were inoculated subcutaneously with the BITs1 Italian strain of Borrelia burgdorferi. Only one dog became infected and B burgdorferi was isolated from its blood and urine three and four weeks after infection. B burgdorferi antibodies were detected by immunofluorescence from four to 11 weeks after infection.

Ornithodoriasis Preceding Borrelia Infection
Archives of Dermatology, 1984Relapsing fever is caused by arthropod-borne spirochetes of the genus Borrelia and is clinically characterized by recurrent episodes of fever and spirochetemia. The endemic form of the disease is transmitted by a tick of the genus Ornithodoros , which is widely distributed throughout the eastern and western hemispheres. 1-3 The incubation period of the
