Morphometric and Paleobiological Insights Into Pleistocene Sicilian Wolf Populations

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Pleistocene wolves (Canis lupus) from Sicily represent one of the few known insular populations of this species from that time period. Despite their potential relevance for understanding carnivore adaptations in insular contexts, no dedicated study has previously investigated their morphology and evolutionary significance.

Tick burden in Bos taurus cattle and its relationship with heat stress in three agroecological zones in the tropics of Colombia

open access: yesParasites & Vectors, 2019
Ticks have a negative effect on dairy and beef cattle production systems around the world, with the concomitant risk they represent for the transmission of some important infectious diseases.

Defining Candidate Imprinted loci in Bos taurus

open access: yesGenes, 2023
Using a whole-genome assembly of Bos taurus, I applied my bioinformatics strategy to locate candidate imprinting control regions (ICRs) genome-wide. In mammals, genomic imprinting plays essential roles in embryogenesis. In my strategy, peaks in plots mark the locations of known, inferred, and candidate ICRs.

Animal medical systems from Apis to apes: history, recent advances and future perspectives

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Animal medical systems encompass a wide range of behaviours aimed at maintaining or improving health. It has become clear that these behaviours are not limited to animals treating themselves (self‐medication) but also include the treatment of group members, resulting in the adoption of the more inclusive term “animal medication”.

Nutritional and productive performance of purebred Nellore heifers and crossed with Brangus and Braford finished in a feedlot system

open access: yesAnais da Academia Brasileira de Ciências
This study evaluated the nutritional and productive performance of Nellore purebred heifers and crossbred Brangus x Nellore (BGNE) and Braford x Nellore (BFNE) in a feedlot system.

Zebra stripes: the questions raised by the answers

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Multiple hypotheses have been suggested to explain why the three zebra species (Equus quagga, E. grevyi and E. zebra) are striped. We review how well these theories explain the nature (rather than simply the existence) of the stripes. Specifically, we explore how well different theories explain (i) the form of zebra stripes (especially on ...

Maternal Nutritional Status Governs Fetal Development by Modulating Imprinting Gene GAB1‐Mediated Trophoblast Differentiation in the Placenta

open access: yesCell Proliferation, EarlyView.
Maternal nutrient restriction disrupts placental homeostasis via GAB1 dysregulation—involving both transcriptional downregulation and autophagy‐dependent protein degradation. These molecular alterations inhibit MAPK signalling‐mediated trophoblast fusion, leading to structural and functional deficits in the maternal–fetal exchange interface.

Restriction fragment length polymorphism in calpain (CAPN2) gene in crossbred cattle

open access: yesBoletim de Indústria Animal, 2012
With advances in molecular genetics have been possible to predict the genetic value of the animal, in particular its potential to transmit desired characters to their offspring, including characters difficult to evaluate or with low heritability, as is ...
