Pepsin Digestion for Proteomic Studies of the Human Hair Shaft

open access: yesRapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry, Volume 40, Issue 6, 30 March 2026.
ABSTRACT Rationale Human hair shafts have received increased research interest owing to their easy accessibility and potential as a window for human health. Because the most abundant component in hair is protein, proteomics is a promising tool for studying the molecular composition of hair shafts.

Investigating Anthropogenic and Social Influences on Diet of Semi‐Urban Vervet Monkeys Using DNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 2, February 2026.
We used eDNA metabarcoding of faecal samples to quantify the dietary composition of two vervet monkey populations in a semi‐urban environment in South Africa over a 4‐month period, and compared these results with visual observations. We found that both methods yielded similar results, but eDNA metabarcoding revealed a greater diversity of consumed taxa.

Intact Proteoform Analysis by Capillary Electrophoresis–Mass Spectrometry. Are We There Yet?

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, Volume 138, Issue 5, 28 January 2026.
Mass spectrometry (MS) and top–down proteomics (TDP) have emerged as powerful tools to decipher proteoform‐level information, advancing biological insight and translational research. This study unites leaders in capillary electrophoresis (CE) and MS from multiple institutions across the globe to showcase the reproducibility, unique information, and ...

No evidence for a recent genetic bottleneck in the endangered Sheko cattle breed (African Bos taurus) revealed by microsatellite analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Sheko is African taurine cattle, valued for its milk yield, adaptation to humid tsetse infested environment and trypanotolerance. We used 30 microsatellite markers in analyzing 30 DNA samples. We found high genetic diversity and no genetic bottlenecks in

Optimizing Cattle, Yak, Camel, and Horse Meat Processing: Species‐Sex Physicochemical Drivers

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2026.
Species primarily determines the nutritional and processing traits of cattle, yak, camel, and horse meats; yak stands out for superior nutrition (high protein/EAA/MUFAs) but requires tenderization, while horse offers greater tenderness but has a darker color and low water‐holding capacity.
