Natural environment and land use in the Chad Basin, NE-Nigeria : preliminary results of an interdisciplinary research [PDF]

open access: yes, 1996
The objective of this paper is to combine the environmental conception of the Kanuri with detailed findings of pedological and botanical field investigations. Interpretation of multitemporal satellite data and aerial photographs should provide land cover

Vegetation on the move: elevational shifts and greening dynamics across the Himalayan alpine zone

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
This study investigates alpine ‘vegetation line' (the upper limit of continuous plant community) dynamics in the Himalayan alpine zone (HAZ) over a 24‐year timescale (1999–2022) using maximum NDVI products derived from Landsat series datasets, adjusted for sampling bias using phenological modelling.

Harnessing the power of machine and deep learning for transferring joint species distribution models considering the structure of biotic interactions

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
The transferability of single or joint species distribution models ((j)SDMs) depends on their ability to predict beyond the observed environmental range and to remain consistent despite shifts in biotic interactions. Transfer accuracy may be improved by recent advances in the application of deep learning that provide greater flexibility and potentially

Honey: Inorganic Composition as Possible Marker for Botanical and Geological Assignment

open access: yesMolecules
Honey can be classified based on its geographical or botanical origin according to Directive 2001/110/EC. Geographical origin is determined when the pollen collection occurs entirely in a specific location, allowing producers to label the honey with the name of the region.

Tracing the origins and evolution of nymphalid butterflies (Lepidoptera) in the Atlantic Forest

open access: yesEcography, EarlyView.
Understanding the relative roles of diversification and dispersal is key to explaining large‐scale biogeographical patterns. Although both processes are known to shape biodiversity, their relative contributions remain understudied for many organisms. Here, we examine how these processes have jointly contributed to the exceptional diversity and endemism

Antioxidant Activity and Inhibition of Carbohydrate Hydrolyzing Enzymes by Underutilized Parts From Some Plant‐Based Foods and Their Effect on Postprandial Hyperglycemia

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
The underutilized parts viz: pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels showed promising antioxidant and inhibition of α‐amylase and α‐glucosidase activities (IC50 values ≤ 100 μg/mL). Similarly, pawpaw seed, banana, plantain, and potato peels reduced postprandial hyperglycemia in sucrose‐ and maltose‐induced hyperglycemia in rats.

Functional Bread From Bambara Groundnut and Orange Peel Attenuates Hyperglycemia and Oxidative Stress in a High‐Fat Diet/Streptozotocin‐Induced Type 2 Diabetes Rat Model

open access: yesFood Chemistry International, EarlyView.
This study evaluated Bambara groundnut–wheat composite bread fortified with orange peel in diabetic rats. Diets significantly lowered blood glucose, inhibited α‐glucosidase and α‐amylase, and boosted antioxidant enzymes compared to controls. Results emphasize BG‐based functional foods' potential to help manage type 2 diabetes through regulation of ...
