Vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGFs) are among the most important angiogenic proteins found on vertebrates. In the last years, some reports of the occurrence of such proteins in snake venoms are rising the importance of this family of proteins as toxins, since they appear to be involved in many features of Viperidae envenoming, such as ...

Prothrombin and Factor X activating properties ofBothrops erythromelasvenom
Annals of Tropical Medicine & Parasitology, 1992The enzymatic properties of Factor II (FII) and Factor X (FX) activators from Bothrops erythromelas venom were investigated. Both activators were inhibited by ethylenediaminetetraacetate (EDTA) and 1,10-phenanthroline, and are thought to be metalloproteinases with molecular weights of 90 kDa and 70-90 kDa, respectively.

In a chromatographic method modification intended to preserve protease activity in Bothrops erythromelas venom, 2 mM CaCl2 was added to the gel filtration buffer [50mM Tris/HCl/150mM NaCl (pH 8.0)], in lieu of an equimolar portion of NaCl. This minor compositional change induced significant differences in the venom elution profile on Superdex 200.

The species Jatropha gossypiifolia, popularly known as "pinhão-roxo", is distributed throughout Brazil, is commonly employed for topical or oral administration in treating wounds, inflammations, and snake bites. Given the significant impact of snakebites on public health and the limitations of antivenom, coupled with the diverse molecular composition ...

In Brazil, around 80% of snakebites are caused by snakes of the genus Bothrops. A three-dimensional culture model was standardized and used to perform treatments with Bothrops erythromelas venom (BeV) and its antivenom (AV). The MRC-5 and L929 cell lines were cultured at increasing cell densities.
