Tunneling without bounce [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review D, 2019
The false vacua of some potentials do not decay via Euclidean bounces. This typically happens for tunneling actions with a flat direction (in field configuration space) that is lifted by a perturbation into a sloping valley, pushing the bounce off to infinity. Using three different approaches we find a consistent picture for such decays.

Rethinking plastic waste: innovations in enzymatic breakdown of oil‐based polyesters and bioplastics

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Plastic pollution remains a critical environmental challenge, and current mechanical and chemical recycling methods are insufficient to achieve a fully circular economy. This review highlights recent breakthroughs in the enzymatic depolymerization of both oil‐derived polyesters and bioplastics, including high‐throughput protein engineering, de novo ...

Insights Into Polarimetric Processing for Wetlands From Backscatter Modeling and Multi-Incidence Radarsat-2 Data

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2018
We have observed unexpected results using the Freeman-Durden (FD) and other polarimetric decompositions in Radarsat-2 quad-pol data from many swamps in Eastern Ontario. In particular, the decompositions reported minimal backscatter from the double-bounce

A Mass-Spring-Damper Model of a Bouncing Ball (Conference proceeding) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The mechanical properties of a vertically dropped ball, represented by an equivalent mass-spring-damper model, are related to the coefficient of restitution and the time of contact of the ball during one bounce with the impacting surface. In addition, it

General solution for scalar perturbations in bouncing cosmologies

open access: yes, 2005
Bouncing cosmologies, suggested by String/M-theory, may provide an alternative to standard inflation to account for the origin of inhomogeneities in our universe. The fundamental question regards the correct way to evolve the scalar perturbations through

Impact of a senior research thesis on students' perceptions of scientific inquiry in distinct student populations

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
This study addressed how a senior research thesis is perceived by undergraduate students. It assessed students' perception of research skills, epistemological beliefs, and career goals in Biochemistry (science) and BDC (science‐business) students. Completing a thesis improved confidence in research skills, resilience, scientific identity, closed gender‐

Minimal percentage of dose received by 90% of the urethra (%UD90) is the most significant predictor of PSA bounce in patients who underwent low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-brachytherapy) for prostate cancer

open access: yesBMC Urology, 2012
Background To clarify the significant clinicopathological and postdosimetric parameters to predict PSA bounce in patients who underwent low-dose-rate brachytherapy (LDR-brachytherapy) for prostate cancer.

Antibiofilm activity of a chionodracine‐derived peptide by NMR‐based metabolomics of cell‐free supernatant of Acinetobacter baumannii clinical strains

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
KHS‐Cnd peptide is able to impair biofilm formation and disaggregate mature biofilms in Acinetobacter baumannii clinical isolates. Differences in extracellular metabolites reflect changes in biofilm metabolism due to KHS‐Cnd treatment. Among the differentially represented extracellular metabolites upon KHS‐Cnd treatment, the significantly altered ...

Prostate specific antigen bounce after intensity-modulated radiation therapy in an Asian population

open access: yesAsian Journal of Urology, 2016
Objective: Serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) is commonly used to evaluate treatment response after definitive radiation therapy (RT). However, PSA levels can temporarily rise without a clear reason, termed “PSA bounce”, and often engender great ...

O($N$) Invariance of the Multi-Field Bounce

open access: yes, 2017
In his 1977 paper on vacuum decay in field theory: The Fate of the False Vacuum, Coleman considered the problem of a single scalar field and assumed that the minimum action tunnelling field configuration, the bounce, is invariant under O(4) rotations in ...
