New method for extracting quasi-bound states from the continuum

open access: yes, 2007
A new parameter-free method is proposed for treatment of single-particle resonances in the real-energy continuum shell model. This method yields quasi-bound states embedded in the continuum which provide a natural generalization of weakly bound single ...

Polarization‐resolved femtosecond Vis/IR spectroscopy tailored for resolving weak signals in biological samples using minimal sample volume

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Unique biological samples, such as site‐specific mutant proteins, are available only in limited quantities. Here, we present a polarization‐resolved transient infrared spectroscopy setup with referencing to improve signal‐to‐noise tailored towards tracing small signals. We provide an overview of characterizing the excitation conditions for polarization‐

Valley edge states as bound states in the continuum

open access: yesScience Bulletin
Bound states in the continuum (BICs) are spatially localized states with energy embedded in the continuum spectrum of extended states. The combination of BICs physics and nontrivial band topology theory giving rise to topological BICs, which are robust against disorders and meanwhile of the merit of conventional BICs, is attracting wide attention ...

Finite-well potential in the 3D nonlinear Schroedinger equation: Application to Bose-Einstein condensation

open access: yes, 2007
Using variational and numerical solutions we show that stationary negative-energy localized (normalizable) bound states can appear in the three-dimensional nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with a finite square-well potential for a range of nonlinearity ...

Applicability of mitotic figure counting by deep learning: a development and pan‐cancer validation study

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
In this study, we developed a deep learning method for mitotic figure counting in H&E‐stained whole‐slide images and evaluated its prognostic impact in 13 external validation cohorts from seven different cancer types. Patients with more mitotic figures per mm2 had significantly worse patient outcome in all the studied cancer types except colorectal ...

Ultra-Sensitive Refractive Index Sensing Based on Quasi-BICs in All-Dielectric Nanorod Array

open access: yesPhotonics
We propose an all-dielectric nanorod array for ultra-sensitive refractive index sensing based on quasi-bound states in the continuum (BICs). The nanorod is fabricated by silicon or silicon with an air hole, i.e., the hollow silicon nanorod.

The Hoyle state and its relatives

open access: yes, 2014
The Hoyle state and other resonances in the continuum above the 3 alpha threshold in 12C are studied in a microscopic cluster model. Whereas the Hoyle state is a very sharp resonance and can be treated reasonably well in bound state approximation, the ...

Single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assays for high‐throughput DNA–protein interaction studies

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
We describe an optimised single‐molecule DNA flow‐stretch assay that visualises DNA–protein interactions in real time. Linear DNA fragments are tethered to a surface and stretched by buffer flow for fluorescence imaging. Using λ and φX174 DNA, this protocol enhances reproducibility and accessibility, providing a versatile approach for studying diverse ...

Continuum-continuum coupling and polarization potentials for weakly bound system

open access: yes, 2009
We investigate the influence of couplings among continuum states in collisions of weakly bound nuclei. For this purpose, we compare cross sections for complete fusion, breakup and elastic scattering evaluated by continuum discretized coupled channel ...

Exon 7 splicing of ERα predicts poor prognosis and increases phenotypic heterogeneity in luminal a subtype breast cancer

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
ERα splice variant ERα∆7 lacks the C‐terminus, and its expression may change phenotypes of breast cancers. Our results showed that ERα∆7 is found in the luminal A subtype, and elevated ERα∆7 levels are linked to improved cell survival with lower proliferation and migration.
