A simple method of infecting rabbits with Bovine herpesvirus 1 and 5
Journal of Virological Methods, 2008This report describes an alternative technique to inoculate rabbits and to reproduce infection by Bovine herpesvirus 1 and 5. First, the nostrils are anaesthetized by aspersion with local anaesthetic. A few seconds later, and after proving the insensitivity of the zone, the rabbits are put on their back legs with their nostrils upwards and the inoculum

Synthetic aminomethylnaphthoquinones inhibit the in vitro replication of bovine herpesvirus 5
Archives of Virology, 2014Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5) is an etiologic agent of meningoencephalitis in cattle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antiviral potential of a series of synthetic Mannich bases derived from lawsone and to investigate at which stage of the BoHV-5 replicative cycle the compounds might be acting.

Efficacy of an inactivated, recombinant bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5) vaccine
Veterinary Microbiology, 2011Bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BoHV-5) is the causative agent of bovine herpetic encephalitis. In countries where BoHV-5 is prevalent, attempts to vaccinate cattle to prevent clinical signs from BoHV-5-induced disease have relied essentially on vaccination with BoHV-1 vaccines.

Bovine herpesvirus type 5 in semen samples from bulls in Iran
Archives of Virology, 2014Bovine herpesvirus 5 (BoHV-5) is an important pathogen of the central nervous system and has already been described in the genital tract of cattle and in semen. This virus is responsible for sporadic epizootics of fatal meningoencephalitis of calves.

Effect of the US3 protein of bovine herpesvirus 5 on the actin cytoskeleton and apoptosis
Veterinary Microbiology, 2011The US3 protein is a unique protein kinase only present in the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily of the herpesviruses. Studies performed with several alphaherpesviruses demonstrated that the US3 protein is involved in cytoskeleton modifications during viral infection and displays anti-apoptotic activity.

Bovine herpesvirus 5 (BoHV-5) is responsible for outbreaks of meningoencephalitis that cause important economic losses in young cattle. BoHV-5 glycoprotein D (gD5) is essential for attachment and penetration into permissive cells and targeting of host immune systems, inducing strong humoral and cellular immune responses.

Bovine herpesvirus‐1 (BHV‐1) and bovine herpesvirus‐5 (BHV‐5) are closely related viruses which exhibit some important differences at the genetic and immunogenic levels which may explain the differences in their pathogenicity and epidemiological characteristics.

Establishment of a rabbit model for bovine herpesvirus type 5 neurological acute infection
Veterinary Microbiology, 1996This study was conducted to evaluate the suitability of the rabbit as a model for bovine, herpesvirus 5 (BHV-5) acute infection. In a preliminary experiment, a total of 24 one-month old New Zealand white rabbits were inoculated with BHV-5 or bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) by the intraconjunctival, intracerebral or intranasal routes.

Restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) were detected within BHV1.1, BHV1.2, and BHV5 genomes using the restriction enzyme PstI. The genomic areas of these changes has not been previously reported. Using Southern blot hybridization with DNA probes representing the entire genome of BHV1.1, areas of genomic variation were located for a ...

Studies on the pathogenicity of bovine herpesvirus type 5 in sheep.
Comparative immunology, microbiology and infectious diseases, 1999Four Merino lambs were intranasally inoculated with bovine herpesvirus type 5 (BHV-5) reference strain N569. Two lambs were mock-inoculated as negative controls. The virus-inoculated animals developed apathy, inappetence, rhinitis, nasal, ocular and genital discharge, slight diarrhea and neurological disorders, like tremor and salivation.
