Sensitive detection systems for infectious agents in xenotransplantation*
Abstract Xenotransplantation of pig cells, tissues, or organs may be associated with transmission of porcine microorganisms, first of all of viruses, to the transplant recipient, potentially inducing a disease (zoonosis). I would like to define detection systems as the complex of sample generation, sample preparation, sample origin, time of sampling ...

The Effect of Bovine Herpesvirus Type 1 Glycoproteins gI and gIII on Herpesvirus Infections
We expressed the bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) glycoproteins, gI and gIII, in bovine cells using a bovine papillomavirus vector. The proteins expressed by these cells had the same Mr as the native BHV-1 proteins and monoclonal antibodies detected no differences in their antigenic structure.

Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in feedlot cattle. Bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) is one of the main culprits of BRD; however, research on BHV-1 is hampered by the lack of suitable models for infection and ...

The interaction between bovine herpesvirus type 1 and activated bovine T lymphocytes
The interaction between activated bovine T lymphocytes (BTLs) and bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) was investigated. BHV-1 infection of BTLs reduced the amplitude of recombinant bovine interleukin 2-induced proliferative responses. This decreased proliferation was caused by a virus-induced lymphocytolysis which was dependent on viable virus and was ...

Effect of Bovine 1 Interferon on Bovine Herpesvirus Type 1-induced Respiratory Disease
Treatment of calves with bovine recombinant alpha 1 interferon prior to challenge with bovine herpesvirus type 1 increased the animals' ability to withstand a subsequent Pasteurella haemolytica challenge. The reduction in viral-bacterial synergy observed following interferon treatment did not appear to be due to a direct effect of the interferon on ...

Persistent infection with bovine herpesvirus type 1: rabbit model [PDF]
Persistent infection with bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) was established in all rabbits after conjunctival inoculation of virus. Spontaneous reactivations of BHV-1 with and without the appearance of recurrent ocular lesions were observed in persistently infected rabbits.

Bovine herpesvirus type 1 (BHV-1) is a neurotropic herpesvirus that causes infectious rhinotracheitis and vulvovaginitis in cattle. The virion host shutoff protein encoded by the BHV-1 UL41 gene is highly conserved in the Alphaherpesvirinae subfamily ...
